The 2009 version is the worst corporate logo I have ever seen. Paul Rand is laughing somewhere in his grave.
Just goes to show that competitions aren't about picking the best ever, just picking the best from the entries that were submitted. You, too, could have submitted 2nd year art college trash like this new logo, and won.
Exactly as I would have anticipated from such a tard designer, it looks significantly better (and maybe the only way they intended it to be seen, or the only way they were capable of creating it) once tons of gradients, glosses, lens flares, and shadows are applied -- see the example below taken from pepsi's website :
