You say that like it's a bad thing...Sommers is another director who came out the gate strong and then tailed off hard with the help of an over-reliance on substandard CGI. May God save him from the fanboy rage if he fucks up that G.I. Joe movie...
Actually, I just used THE MUMMY as an example of a big-budget, mainstream blockbuster film that could make a newcomer a "movie star." And, yes, I admit it is snobbish of me, but I have no interest in that stuff, but I didn't mean to disparage it.
THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE, on the other hand, is the kind of project that ANY serious actor or aspiring movie star would be very, very fortunate to get a major role in. (THE MUMMY is also the sort of movie any serious actor would be happy to collect a paycheck to be in.) The Soderbergh project could be a real career builder in an area of film acting that I think Sasha is interested in. My only real point is that the trend to play it down by saying no one will see it, or no other names are in it, or it will go straight to video is really unfair, particularly considering where she is coming from.
I think the deal Soderbergh has with Cuban is for a bunch of indie projects that will debut simultaneously in limited theatrical release, on the web and on cable. Regardless where this film goes, she should be rightfully proud to have been chosen for it.
