Every country subsidizes its own industries to some extent. I'm not completely up to speed with the situation in the US or Japan, but I do know how it works in Europe (incl. UK). It's not a direct flow of money, because it's not allowed by the EU, but there are always ways around that.

In Germany, it's definitely NOT common practice to sponsor the automotive industry.
