http://www.usnews.com/blogs/barone/2008/12/05/jeb-bush-the-outstanding-governor-of-this-decade-should-run-for-senate.html

Florida Sen. Mel Martinez's surprising decision not to run for re-election in 2010 has led former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to seriously consider running for the seat. This is very good news for Republicans: Martinez's poll numbers have been lousy, while Bush's are very high. Bush, in my judgment, was the outstanding state governor of this decade, for reasons that Peter Robinson of the Hoover Institution sets out. (His leading competitor for that title, in my judgment, is Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, a Democrat.) Operating in a state where liberal newspapers, teachers' unions, and trial lawyers maintained a continual barrage of criticism, Bush and the Republican legislature produced the nation's best education reform and major changes in healthcare, while Bush himself proved masterful in handling hurricane relief. One reason for the federal government's poor response to Hurricane Katrina was that the feds were used to dealing with Jeb Bush and Florida's competent local officials; dealing with the hapless New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco was quite a different thing.

It has long been thought that Bush is temperamentally ill-suited to be a legislator, and in fact he has never been one. But he is a man of original ideas as well as impressive follow-through. As a senator he would attract national attention initially as the brother and son of presidents, but over time he would do so because of the quality of his ideas. One other thing: He is fluent in Spanish and has proven appeal to Hispanic voters. And I mean fluent. I have seen him speaking to a crowd in Miami and switching from English to Spanish and back again in the same sentence, making jokes in both languages. He once told me that he was trying to make his accent less Mexican (his wife is from Mexico, and he met her while studying there) and more Cuban.

Bush says that he will decide over the Christmas season whether he'll run for the Senate. If he does, he will probably pre-empt the field on the Republican side (as he did when he ran for governor in 1998) and will be a heavy favorite in the general election. I hope he does. Mel Martinez's decision to retire has opened the way for this gifted politician to make a contribution to national politics and public policy. And to the Republican Party, which needs to find some outside-the-box candidates if it's to have any chance to increase its numbers in Congress in 2010.

HA HA HA!!!

Wait; this isn't from "the Onion?"

Yes, what America (or at least Florida) needs is some Bush, and the fresh, exciting ideas that the Bush name conveys...

"One other thing: He is fluent in Spanish and has proven appeal to Hispanic voters. And I mean fluent. I have seen him speaking to a crowd in Miami and switching from English to Spanish and back again in the same sentence, making jokes in both languages."

I think this is called schizophrenia.

I can't wait to see how badly Barackkkkkkk, screws up. I wonder if it will be as bad as the Clinton's, and yet another Bush will be elected to the White House afterwards.

The "change" is the idea of selecting people for positions of power based on their abilities and not party loyalty. Anyone with the proper knowledge to hit the ground running are bound to have spent time in the Clinton administration. Which is not a bad thing. The Democratic party don't make ridiculous choices to pander to base groups (ie Palin and the bible bunch).

Funny to see you Repug Dead Enders spin your bitter little wheels. Sad to see you wish further ills on the country just for political gain. Isn't that what you said was wrong with us "Godless Socialist Libruls" for hating bush and his failed policies?

If Hillary can just be at the right place at the right time....she will slam "Alexander Haig" dunk it....and do what he couldnt....

Her first call will be to Palin to tell her that she is going to impeach her for stealing her thunder.

After that Emeril Lagasse will be sworn in as interim VP and as his first act will have Clinton sign into law the new Solgan for the USA.....it will be....BAM!

So elab, do you think Hillary was a good choice based on expertise rather then political criteria?

Given the choices, he could've picked a lot worse.

I'm guardedly optimistic about his picks thus far. I didn't vote for him because I thought he'd drift too far to the left, into Pelosi territory. His picks so far say he intends to govern from the center. Time will tell.

The best pick Obama made is still his first: Rahm Emmanuel as Chief of Staff. Boehner may bitch and moan about partisanship, but the one who has to worry about him is Pelosi, because He's going to be the one who gets to tell her "No" when she's completely out to lunch.

The OP's point about Jeb being a possibility for the Senate is, unfortunately, true.

Hillary Clinton will make a fine Secretary of State. She has a ton of very relevant experience, and has proven competence. She has a lot of exposure to foreign leaders and knows how to think on her feet in the presence of power brokers. She has shown organizational skills up to the job of running the Department.

My concern is how long it will take to turn the corner on this. My observation as a Government contractor was that it took about 4 years for the incompetent ideologues to promote and appoint their own kind down to the middle management level, where real lasting harm was done to us all. I hope the Obama administration will be faster to spread effective management, and to get rid of the echo chamber listening morons.

The new administration has no where to go but up. Bush was the worst president since Mussolini.

Jim: I'm not saying it was bad choice, just that it was obviously a nomination based on political criteria, rather then expertise.

agreed. I am also pleased with Shinsheski (sp) as veterans affairs sec. He was given a raw ass deal from bush/rummy/wolfowitz et al after he was the only one with the stones to suggest that their Iraq invasion plans were a tad light.

I also like the press secretary pick... loved when he turned the tables on Sean Hannity and fed him his own shit until he almost choked and cried.

Since the Repug lemmings got their asses handed to them on issues, they are hoping against hope that they can play gotcha politics with the new administration. While the Repug senators try to rape the American worker, and Bush tries to rape the American landscape on his way out. Pitiful. You've had your go at ruining this country, now let some competent people rebuild.

Do you share Gunkabators brain? I'm a Libertarian. Enough of the liberal "we can't be wrong because we're rooting for the right team crap". I can look and see a bunch of things I don't like about the Libertarian stance although it is still way better than anything the Big 2 have to offer. Would it really kill you to take a step back and actually look at what you're voting for, with a critical eye, rather than just rooting for the home team blindly?

I didn't vote for Bubba in '96, selling out the gays on the eve of the election was the final straw. I voted for Nader. And I am concerned about all of the Obama centrist appointments. But I'll not take shots at Clinton because he fooled around a little at the office. And I'll not sit quietly when folks try to tarnish Obama by thin associations, before any policy has been put into place.

Kudos to Bush for his Guard service, and to all who have served in the Guard. It is his service as Commander in Chief that has been dishonorable. I'll stick to the argument that heading in the other direction can't be wrong.

-Chuck, Vegetarian fanboy

Edit to add - Yea, I am also concerned about Obama having to spend a lot of his time fending off shit like this.

quoting the wiki-

Known for shrewd party politics, Daley was the prototypical machine politician, and his Chicago Democratic Machine, based on control of thousands of patronage positions, was instrumental in bringing a narrow 8,000 vote victory in Illinois for John F. Kennedy in 1960. Many Daley opponents allege that Mayor Daley, JFK, and LBJ stole the 1960 election by stuffing ballot boxes in Texas and rigging the vote in Chicago.

so selling seats in dc...or giving the presidency to kennedy or LBJ...whats the diff.

I just saw on ebay today....ted stephens maybe selling his seat....just too much press for him as well.....

Picky. Thing is most Americans don't like progressive policies, they prefer a slower rate of change, most people we're just pissed off enough at GW to for him, instead, and maybe he realizes that.

blasphemy!

her success at "draining the gop swamp" and immediate action in the "first 100 hours" of the '06 congress is undeniable.

and I'm sure obama's campaign promise of an "open and transparent" leadership will answer any and all questions regarding this small blago speed bump quickly followed by unicorns, rainbows and world peace.

gotcha politics? come on. the connection between blago, rahm, and bo is hardly gotcha politics, especially when you throw in some tony resko that ties them all together. but to be completely honest, I hope bo had absolutely nothing to do with this mess. I'd prefer that our incoming pres is squeaky clean, but it's not looking good.

While the Repug senators try to rape the American worker, and Bush tries to rape the American landscape on his way out. Pitiful. You've had your go at ruining this country, now let some competent people rebuild.

sure. the $74 an hour uaw union assembly line worker is really getting raped by bush. rebuilding america starts at $75 an hour. american auto comps will continue to fail til the unions accept reality.

And until the industry starts developing and producing a viable alternative for the gas-guzzlers.

But I agree with k1ng that it's far from realistic what the uaw tries to hold on to.

Keep trying to Union-bust and blame the American worker for this. Keep trying to tarnish the President-elect by associations that don't exist. Keep digging in your ideological heels and opposing every good change. And, please, keep letting right wing radio wackos set the talking point lies for your party.

Who opposed the health care reforms and fuel efficiency standards that would have kept the Detroit automakers from digging this hole for themselves?

I think the Gov't should require the bailed-out banks to float GM and Chrysler loans. That's how things were supposed to work, bailing out the big financial boys would free up the credit markets and let the economy start moving again.

There's lots of auto workers in this town, I'm glad I'm not one of 'em. But they do have the basics, a good living wage, benifits, and retirement. As it should be. But the $75/hr is a lie, and if you repeat lies, you are a liar.

Chuck, how much more per hour do they make than ordinary American workers? Even those in Foreign-Owned auto factories here in the states?

Don't exist? There's no association between Obama and the Governor of his home state?

His initial claim that he knew nothing about it is patently disingenuous. HOWEVER, having said that, knowledge and actions are entirely different matters. I think that if I was the President-Elect and this asshole was making demands upon me regarding my former Senate seat the first person I'd call would be Fitzpatrick. Especially when it was common knowledge he was being investigated.

I take Obama and Fitzgerald at their word when they say he had nothing to do with it. But no knowledge? No association? C'mon.

I'm liking the change. Most especially, I'm liking Obama's sober and responsible shift to the center. If he'd campaigned like this I might have actually voted for him.

The average American worker is now Panzer flipping burgers. Hey, the Bush administration tried to call that a manufacturing job.

I've heard that the Big 3's workers are making about the same as the workers in the foreign-owned and southern senator-owning car plants. Unions have made, and are prepared to make more, concessions. But they will not agree to negotiate a race to the bottom with Republican senators.

Sounds like ya'll agree with me, or something close to agreement.

Do ya'll fit liberal-conservative, Dem-Rep labels, Libertarian, or just sit in the weeds attacking all public servants? Let's hear some positive comments about something. What do you like?

There is nothing average whatsoever about Dimitri the Retard.

I've heard it's a lot more, and the guys in the foreign owned plants still make more than the average American worker.

I can't speak for "Y'all," but I find labels inadequate and over-simplistic. I think those who blindly agree 100% with any person, party or platform are one of the reasons we're in this mess.

I just told you what I like. If you'd actually read what I wrote instead of reflexively lashing out at your perceived enemies you might have gotten that.

Yes and there are just two reasons that the big 3 should not get ANY money from the govnt...you mentioned the first one with the UAW....the other is upon there initial panhandling of congress for billions of dollars naturally the CEO pricks flew into DC on one of their many corporate private learjet fleet that they maintain...excessive executive perks/salaries for the CEO’s got to go for failing companies…that want handouts.

I did however love their politically correct spin on returning to Washington…..they all drove….hybrids or some other non regular gas powered vehicle……these guys should quit the corporate world and go straight Hollywood……great actors. They all could have won the academy award individually.

Mostly, ya'll'r (Ohio word) pragmatic centrists, with a good measure of cynicism. Very mainstream.

I am a full blown lefty, with a special concern on civil liberties.

I think Barry will serve us well.

Actually, I think we should all live in nudist collectives growing hemp and organic vegtables, and using wind and solar to power our Gag Factor viewing.

Now, back to the boobs.

Why do you live in the US then? It seems Cuba would be more to your liking. Just curious.

Because no matter how much he complains about America not being a free country anymore, Cuba isn't going let him get his copies of Gag Factor.
