Simpson sentenced to at least 15 years
Former football great O.J. Simpson was sentenced today to at least 15 years in prison for his role in a confrontation in a Las Vegas hotel in 2007. Simpson told the judge before the sentence was read that did not mean to hurt anyone and did not know he was doing anything illegal. "I didn't mean to steal anything from anybody."

If Johnnie Cochran were still around he would have given his friend Orenthal James his services Pro bono just to keep Simpson's legacy alive.

This is beautiful: "The most serious penalty received by the onetime star was 15 years for kidnapping. He was sentenced to an additional six years for use of a deadly weapon in the commission of that crime, plus 12 years for assault, bringing his total maximum term to 33 years."

LAS VEGAS (AP) — O.J. Simpson was transferred Monday from jail to a Nevada state prison to begin serving nine to 33 years for his felony convictions in a gunpoint confrontation with two sports memorabilia dealers, a state corrections official said.

Simpson, 61, arrived at High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Suzanne Pardee said. The all-male medium security prison, about 45 miles northwest of Las Vegas, has 3,000 beds and serves as the intake center for all new southern Nevada prison inmates.

"It went as expected," said Simpson lawyer Yale Galanter, who said he knew Simpson had been due to be moved sometime this week from the Clark County jail. "We're actually expecting that he'll be assigned to one of the southern Nevada prisons."

Simpson trial co-defendant Clarence "C.J." Stewart remained Monday at the Clark County Detention Center, jail records showed.

Stewart, 54, received 7 1/2 to 27 years when he and Simpson were sentenced Friday on 10 charges by Judge Jackie Glass in Las Vegas.

A Clark County District Court jury found the two men guilty Oct. 3 of 12 charges, including kidnapping, armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and conspiracy in the Sept. 13, 2007, confrontation. The judge dismissed two felony coercion charges at sentencing.

Simpson, Stewart and four former co-defendants were accused of robbing two memorabilia dealers at gunpoint in a cramped room at the Palace Station casino hotel.

Simpson insisted he only wanted to retrieve items that he said had been stolen from him in the years after he was acquitted of murder in the 1994 slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman in Los Angeles.

The four former co-defendants — Michael McClinton, Walter Alexander, Charles Cashmore and Charles Ehrlich — face sentencing Tuesday morning before Glass. Each pleaded guilty to reduced felony charges and testified against Simpson and Stewart in return for a chance at probation instead of prison.

McClinton faces up to 11 years for robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. Alexander faces up to six years for conspiracy to commit robbery, but received a promise that prosecutors would argue for a suspended sentence. Ehrlich faces up to five years for attempted burglary and attempted accessory to robbery. Cashmore faces up to five years for accessory to robbery.

State prisons chief Howard Skolnik has said Simpson and Stewart would spend their first 21 days in prison undergoing inmate intake evaluations before they are assigned to a prison to serve their sentences.

For those three weeks, the daily routine is mostly boredom, Skolnik said. Inmates are allowed five hours a day outside their cells, and no mail or parcel deliveries. Only their lawyers may visit.

High Desert State Prison is a new-generation design correctional facility capable of handling multi-classifications of new inmates and custody levels of medium, close, and maximum lock-up or segregation. This institution consists of seven (7) housing units, each with a potential capacity of housing 332 inmates; one (1) Intake housing unit with a capacity of 332 inmates and one (1) Segregation housing unit with a potential capacity of 166 inmates. The physical plant design of each housing unit creates, in essence, two (2) separate housing pods sharing a common maintenance core. The housing units are designed to accommodate a wide range of services and will provide staff a resource to manage inmates who range from high-medium security to those who are at risk to themselves and others. The housing can operate as free flow inmate movement, secure lock-up, or any level in between. The units allow effective observation and control of inmate movement, space for programs and activities, and office space for caseworkers and team management.

Additionally, High Desert State Prison contains all necessary support services including, but not limited to, Chapel, Culinary, Infirmary, Intake Processing, Education, Law Library, Laundry, Inmate Store, Coffee Shop and a Visitation Center. It should be noted that the Infirmary contains a 29-bed ward. The institutional Culinary has six (6) dining halls, each capable of seating 144 inmates. The Institution's Culinary spans about 50,000 square feet and is capable of feeding approximately 2,000 inmates. Phase Three construction will add equipment, which will bring our feeding capacity upto approximately 3,000 inmates.

As the reception and intake center, High Desert State Prison processes all inmates from the jails and courts of the southern part of the state. Inmates receive intake processing, identification, medical and mental health examinations and screenings. Initial classification is conducted to determine which institution the inmate will be assigned to and what their custody level will be. Inmates will receive an orientation, a rule book, classroom instruction on the rule book and sample of self-help programs. High Desert State Prison has incorporated a level management system that places personal responsibility on the inmate for his own behavior. The level system consists of five (5) levels where inmates earn incremental and sequential amounts of responsibilities, privileges and opportunities. Movement through the levels is dependent upon the inmates' behavior, attitude, work and programming performance. New inmates are allowed to volunteer for an accelerated path through the level system with a structured living program, which is a highly structured quasi-military curriculum.

High Desert is designed to meet the department's operational philosophy to ensure a safe secure environment for the community, staff responsible for inmate management, and for the inmates assigned to the facility. The first phase of the prison consists of four (4) Lovelock-style housing units. One (1) unit is the reception center. The adjacent unit is for administrative segregation and detention. The remaining two (2) units and the units of the second phase are for medium security general population housing.

The High Desert State Prison will be the most secure prison in the department. All cell doors in the units are operated by rack and pinion mechanisms from the unit control rooms. The prison has five (5) perimeter towers and one (1) yard tower as well as interior gunposts above the housing units, operations center, culinary building, and in each dining room. In addition, the complex has a lethal electric fence, perimeter observation towers, and a "no-man's land" inside the fence allows officers in towers to observe any inappropriate inmate movement toward the fence from inside the facility. Each two (2) housing units together form a secure compound and can be operated in whatever manner may become necessary. Access to the main compound is controlled by an armed officer in a protection post above each two (2) units.

The Warden of the High Desert State Prison also supervises the Tonopah Conservation Camp, which is a minimum security conservation camp that houses 146 inmates. The conservation camp is for inmates assigned to the Nevada Division of Forestry and to camp operations support assignments.
