I have an OKI 900. In it's day it was pretty fun, you could unlock the ability to scan the cell towers with it so you could spend time walking around listening to other people's calls. Power it up. Then hit 7 and 9 together. MNU, SND, END, RCL, STO, CLR. Then 1 and 3 at the same time. The screen says "good timing!!!!" and you have access to all kinds of neat things, I think you could even change your own phone number. The batteries I have don't hold a charge anymore so I haven't fussed with it in years.
Aside from my OKI I have never used one and don't intend to.

I have had an LG EnV for about 2 years now. I like it alot and dread having to upgrade to the new model, I don't think it is as nice.Good organizer,MP3 player, Bluetooth,GPS Navigator and a load of other features.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1:
I needed a good email device with a decent keyboard, but I'm not a fan of the Blackberry form factor and didn't want the proprietary service lock-in that comes with them. I considered the Nokia E90, but that's over 18 months old now with no sign of an update, and runs Symbian, which looks to be on the way out. Also looked at the HTC Touch Pro, very similar spec and price, but the Xperia has a better screen and seems much better built (bizarrely, as it is also manufactured by HTC.)
The 800x480 screen really is something to behold, media and web capabilities are top notch. The battery has a decent capacity, but all that media functionaly is thirsty. With aggresive power saving settings you'll get maybe a day of intensive use, two days of moderate use, or a week of sitting in you pocket. In the month I've had it, it's behaved reasonably for first release of a smartphone. A couple of glitches required resets, not too bad - hopefully the stability with improve with firmware updates.
A tip for anyone who gets one of these: The default Windows Mobile interface is PDA-oriented and way too stylus dependent. The first thing you should do is download the "SPB Mobile Shell" panel available free on the SE site, which makes it much more thumb-friendly, like a phone should be.

I was a Palm Treo girl for a long time.. then it started crashing, and crashing, and.. well you get the pattern. So I switched to a Palm Centro when they came out. I liked it a lot! However, a few weeks ago I got the new Instinct. If you need a smart phone, this isnt it. If you text a lot, pass on it! If you want some nifty cool features and a functional phone, yay! This could be a great phone for you. But Ill be going back to the store this week, cuz it SURE isnt the phone for me!! Cool features or not!

Nokia something. Got it for free with the phone contract. I use it as alarm clock. It's only there so people can reach me when necessary.
Oh, I can use it as a radio, when I go by train.

I have the same device. I've dropped it off roofs several times and abused it in general. It's a good solid phone.

Aww that fucken sucks. I've had a BlackBerry forever and was hoping against all hope(the reviews like Mark said) that the new one was "it".
Lou: the Storm has grown on me a bit in the last day, but I'm still going to give it to a co-worker and wait out the BB 8900 Javelin. I have a buddy at RIM (the makers of blackberry) that said employees skipped the Bold as their company phone, in favor of the Javelin because its smaller and lighter than a Bold (or Curve). See the pic below - the Javelin is in the middle.
Gia: +1 on plastic keys - touchscreens suck for typing. Put the BB Javelin on your list for Santa; the new cam on it is 3.2 megapixels w/ autofocus, flash and video recording.. AND a black trackball (the deal sealer). It's coming to Tmobile any time now.

UPDATE: I just picked up a Blackberry Storm, thinking I'd prove all the poor reviews wrong by finding some kind of elusive "inner beauty" that comes with enough patience with a new device, but alas no such luck - it has none. I was hoping it could replace my aging BB Curve but it's too cumbersome. So I'm either going iPhone (ugh) or waiting for the Blackberry Javelin (aka Curve II) since it'll have plastic keys - unfortunately I have to type emails on the phone all day long for biz.
Thanks for your review, I just "x'd" that off the list. I was thinking of getting it this week cause Im due for an update. Fuck.....I wanted that or the Envy...but I still don't know.

I'm in VT and the Iphone isn't really a choice eventhough I work tri-state. Verizon is where it's at for me as far as all around coverage. I'll wait out the Curve II. Thanks Mark.

I'm with AT&T and have a Blackjack II. So far it's been a great little phone. Stereo blue tooth, GPS, email, ect. I did upgrade the firmware to 6.1, not much difference except the phone locks onto satellites a lot faster. Dropped it a couple of times, use it outdoor in the heat and cold, rain ect, hasn't locked up once.
If I were to get another phone right now I'd like to look at the HTC Fuze, or some of the new Samsung phones, based on how well mine has preformed.

I have had the Sprint Katana by Sanyo for the last 2 years... I have had zero problems with it, but the camera sucks donkey balls.
I am going to give the new Insight a go shortly though. I finally am breaking down and wanting solid web access on my phone.

I need some help here folks.
Seems I need to start carrying a cell phone for work. I have never used them before and I dislike them.
Anyway, realize that I know nothing about this so speak slowly.
I need a phone that is "pay as you go". I expect to need it very infrequently. A few minutes 5 days a week. So getting a "plan" seems unnecessary.
I do not need any features at all. I will not be texting or anything more complex than answering the occasional call.
It needs to be durable. No flip phones or anything else with obvious weak points. It is going to have the shit beaten out of it.
As cheap as possible. That is very important. Because even though it's a job related write off I'm still not interested in throwing money on a gadget I don't like.
I am not sure if it matters but my location is Toronto, ON.
Thanks folks. Any advice would be appreciated. And please keep it simple.
I have always been interested in phones, just despised cells because I think they are more rude than helpful.
Can anyone else (I'm looking at the HAMs) manually pulse dial a phone?

When I lost my sidekick a while ago I got a virgin prepaid/pay as you go phone while I waited for my new one. It's just a simple flip phone and you only pay for the minutes you need. The phone itself is like $13 and they have minute cards from $10 and up. The service was good--I had service in basements and the top platform at the train stations... But I use my phone way too much, so pay as you go was costing me a lot more in those couple weeks than my real phone.

You're right, conq. I skimmed. My bad. But they do have flat phones I think they're kyocera or motorola. Tmobile and AT&T also have prepaid packages with the same kind of flat phones. The only problem with those is that they can make phone calls in your pocket.

I've never played with phones much. The cells now are all digital, not a whole lot you can do easily, I don't think.
Conq., re-consider a flip phone, they are fairly durable when closed. But don't drop it in the toilet! Mine has survived 2 years with me, hiking, motorcycling, been dropped a few times. I don't use it much, mostly text and talk with my co-worker and call California to my aunt.
I got mine free with a 2 year contract, now I need to get another phone because I am eligible for an upgrade after 2 years and my current phone sucks as far as reception. All I need is voice and text. Glad this got bumped.
Verizon is the best choice for RV folks, best national coverage.
My co-worker said to go to the Verizon place and ask them which one has the best reception. Also, she said the cameras suck, but is useful when working on something, to take a picture and go to the store to find the right plumbing part, or to take a picture before disassembling something, so you know how it goes back together.
Everything I really needed to know, I learned on XPT.

Chuck.
The main worry I have about with phones that have any obvious weak points (the hinge on a flippy phone) stems from my feelings that the best piece of electronic flotsam is also the toughest.
If I need to buy a phone (and I don't want this to be habitual) I want it to be tough as fuck. It needs to be able to bounce down staircases.
And survive the occasional splash of paint thinner is possible.

NO! I dropped mine on my tile floor and shattered the screen the other day. With a new iPhone coming out real soon, I decided to downgrade to an old-timey Motorola V600 I had in a drawer. I feel like I'm in the fucking stone-age now.

By the way do you have any advice on a durable cell phone which is not particularly costly?
I know you were trying to stay on topic but this is an old thread and I resurrected it to ask a question without starting a thread of my own.
Don't worry about it. I think I acted too aggressively.

Verizon has a phone (made by Casio of all companies) that is designed for use on a construction site. You can supposedly drop it off a building without hurting it. For what it's worth,I got this info from a co-worker who has a friend that works in construction and supposedly has one. I have no idea what the cost of it is however.
