RS. No band will ever top the music they made between '68 and '72, imo.

Stones by a wide margin. If for no other reason than Keith Richard's Super Liver.

The Stones never let Yoko Ono sing back up vocals on any of their songs. Game, set, and match.

(Looks at my CD collection) Beatles: Abbey Road (and half counts McCartney's Band on the Run) Stones: Hot Rocks 64-71, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street, Some Girls, Goats Head Soup, It's Only Rock and Roll Add to TUP's comment about Yoko back-up warblings, Paul let Linda sing too. Stones by a landslide.

Plus now that I think on it, Stones tunes are more appropriate to fuck good little whores to. Honestly, who'd WANT to fuck to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band?!?!

Beatles by a mile. I'm actually surprised that anyone would pick the Stones over the Beatles at all. Stones are overrated.

Black Sabbath.
But to answer the poll I like the Stones way better than the Beatles.
It's not that the Beatles were musically bankrupt or anything like that it's that I fucking hate hippies.

The better band? Rolling Stones, by far.
The best songs/songwriters? Lennon/McCartney

oh yeah...youtube has the never released documentary of classic era stones Cocksucker Blues all parts are seemingly there...i can't imagine they will be for long from wikipedia Cocksucker Blues is an unreleased documentary film directed by Robert Frank chronicling The Rolling Stones' North American tour in 1972 in support of their album Exile on Main Street. There was much anticipation for the band's arrival, with them having not visited the United States since the 1969 disaster at Altamont Free Concert, in which a fan, Meredith Hunter, was stabbed and beaten to death by Hells Angels. The tour fulfilled its promise of tremendous rock and roll performances on stage. Behind the scenes, the tour embodied debauchery, lewdness and hedonism. The film was shot cinéma vérité, with several cameras with plenty of film left lying around for anyone in the entourage to pick up and start shooting. This allowed the film's audience to witness backstage parties, drug use (Mick Jagger is seen snorting cocaine backstage), roadie antics, fey artists and the Stones with their defenses down. "Cocksucker Blues" was the title of a song Mick Jagger wrote to be the Stones' final single for Decca Records, as per their contract. Its context and language was chosen specifically to anger Decca executives. The track was refused by Decca and only released later on a West German compilation in 1983, although the compilation was discontinued and re-released without the song.[1] The film itself is under a court order which forbids it from being shown unless the director is physically present. This ruling stems from the conflict that arose when the band, which had commissioned the film, decided that its content was inappropriate and didn't want it shown. The director felt otherwise and thus the ruling. However, bootleg copies of the film are available. It has somewhat of a popular aura surrounding it around fellow rockers, such as Marilyn Manson, who mentioned viewing it and seeing his living room in it (parts of it were filmed at the Mary Astor House, on Appian Way in Laurel Canyon where Manson has resided since late 1997). source

God the Stones are one of the most over-rated rock bands of all time.
Not a huge Beatles fan here personally, but they are heads and shoulders above the fucking Rolling Stones.

I'm not sure why The Who thought an arpeggiator ever sounded good in any song.

Townshend is a great musician, but Moon, Daltrey and Entwhistle are nothing special.
The Beatles didn't excel at live gigs either.

Wait... Keith Moon, arguably one of the greatest drummers of all time, was nothing special?!?!?

They can barely make their biggest hit sound good live. It should have been called the Pete Townshend trio or whatever.
Then theres the kidtouching..
Go out and buy Live at Leeds.

The drummer from Behemoth is about a million times better than Keith Moon.
If you want to argue technical proficiency than Keith Moon loses.
He wasn't a very good drummer compared to drum musicians today.
Keith Moon is an afterthought. He was not an especially proficient drummer.

Stooges > live Who '65-pre Quadrophenia tour (e.g. "Live at Leeds") > Rolling Stones with Mick Taylor ("Let it Bleed", "Beggars Banquet", "Exile on Main Street", "Sticky Fingers") > Beatles ("Revolver" through "Abbey Road") > a vast majority of rock music ever made

keith moon succeeds as a great drummer for reasons far beyond technical prowess.
I agree.
I'm not sure I can get behind the premise of this thread. It's kinda like arguing renaissance artists. Is Michelangelo "better" than Da Vinci, Donatello, etc.?
They were each unique artists who synergistclly combined to define an era, an epoch. Maybe the Beatles get points for their overall opus, but there are others with songs I like better than any one Lennon/McCartney tune.
I'm off to see my friend/favorite bartender's band play. I've been hearing about this band since February, but they've refused to gig until they "got it right." After nine months in the studio, they'd better have.
And, for the record, THIS is the Beatles' most underrated song.

I'll probably either get stoned or pelted with tomatoes for saying this but I actually prefer Wings to the Beatles. Opening medley from RockshowThe Beatles were just too up and down. For every Helter Skelter, Lovely Rita, and In My Life gold nugget there is a Good Morning Good Morning, Eleanor Rigby, Revolution #9 fecal one.

Neither. Gimme some Elvis Presley any day of the week. Elvis was a trucker you know. I just read that Rolling Stone did a survey to find the greatest rock singer of all time, and Elvis was #3? WTF is THAT?!?!? Last I checked, he was still The King, and even HE can't get no satisfaction. Unbelievable. -Keep It Dirty

keith moon was way overrated. i could play all that who shit when i was maybe 3 or 4 yrs into drumming. maybe sooner if i tried. the who however, did have a few great albums.'who are you' is the goods.
'can't you hear me knocking' is cool and 'some girls' is part of my soundtrack of being a happy kid in nyc and not yet hating the world, but in general the stones are overrated.
beatles after they started doing drugs were pretty good. the last 4 or 5 albums i like alot. but all that 'i wanna hold you hand' and 'please please me' shit is about equal to franki valli and the 4 seasons.

1st of all and most important, his shit was nothing special. at all.
2nd of all, i was a fucking bad ass on the kit when i played every day.
never like a terry bozzio or any of those insane fusion guys...not even close. but could play anything on rock radio after a few tries except some of the more intricate Rush shit.
