40 states make deal with Craigslist to crack down on ads for prostitution
HARTFORD, Conn. November 6, 2008 (AP)

Under the watchful eye of law enforcement in 40 states, Craigslist pledged Thursday to crack down on ads for prostitution on its Web sites.

As part of Craigslist's agreement with attorneys general around the country, anyone who posts an "erotic services" ad will be required to provide a working phone number and pay a fee with a valid credit card. The Web site will provide that information to law enforcement if subpoenaed.

Craigslist has also agreed to sue 14 software and Internet companies that help people who post erotic service ads to circumvent the Web site's defenses against inappropriate content and illegal activity.

Craigslist, which posts ads for everything from apartment rentals to jobs in dozens of cities, will also begin using new search technology in an effort to help authorities find missing children and victims of human trafficking.

Police across the country have been arresting people for using Web sites like Craigslist to advertise the sexual services of women and children.

"The dark side of the Internet must be stopped from eclipsing its immense potential for good," Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said in a statement Thursday.

The agreement was joined by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

"The criminals engaged in the sexual trafficking of children no longer parade them on the streets of America's cities," said NCMEC President and Chief Executive Ernie Allen. "Today, they market them via the Internet."

States that signed the agreement include Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Washington, D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam also joined.

Thus ends the use of "roses" as currency.

Gia once paid a Craigslist whore in real roses, IIRC.

Notice California was not on that list (unless there's already an agreement and those 40 states are simply new additions). God forbid Shy Love's only remaining source of banged & bruised talent in the recycle bin of Craigslist dries up now if California were to join in.

Amusing also is how news agencies love to crowbar in "the sexual exploitation of children" to stories like these as if it's one and the same.

How many of those 40 Attorneys General are up for re-election in 2009?

It always starts right after the election day.

Speaking of hookers and (former) Attorneys General...

No Federal Charges Against Spitzer

ALBANY — Former Gov. Eliot Spitzer will not be charged with any crime for his patronage of a prostitution ring, federal investigators announced on Thursday.

The announcement was made by the office of Michael J. Garcia, the United States attorney in Manhattan.

Mr. Spitzer announced his resignation in March two days after The New York Times reported his involvement in a high-priced prostitution ring, the Emperors Club V.I.P.

The statement from Mr. Garcia read:

“Eliot Spitzer has acknowledged to this office that he was a client of, and made payments to, the Emperors Club V.I.P.,” the statement said. “Our investigation has shown that on multiple occasions, Mr. Spitzer arranged for women to travel from one state to another state to engage in prostitution. After a thorough investigation, this Office has uncovered no evidence of misuse of public or campaign funds. In addition, we have determined that there is insufficient evidence to bring charges against Mr. Spitzer for any offense relating to the withdrawal of funds for, and his payments to, the Emperors Club V.I.P.

“In light of the policy of the Department of Justice with respect to prostitution offenses and the longstanding practice of this office, as well as Mr. Spitzer’s acceptance of responsibility for his conduct, we have concluded that the public interest would not be further advanced by filing criminal charges in this matter.”

Mr. Spitzer, in a statement, said: “I understand the office of the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York has decided that it will not bring criminal charges against me. I appreciate the impartiality and thoroughness of the investigation by the U.S. attorney’s office, and I acknowledge and accept responsibility for the conduct it disclosed.

“I resigned my position as governor because I recognized that conduct was unworthy of an elected official. I once again apologize for my actions, and for the pain and disappointment those actions caused my family and the many people who supported me during my career in public life.”

I can tell you that the NJ AG isn't since it isn't an elected position. He serves at the pleasure of the Governor. BUT the governor is up for election.

btw, I've heard Corzine might be angling for place in Obama's cabinet.

Tis the season. Everyone from Goldman Sachs is angling for a job in the next administration, bro.

The Times puts Larry Summers and and NY Fed Chief Tim Geithner in the lead for Treasury.
