Some children learned a hard life lesson this Halloween when trick or treating in a Grosse Pointe Farms neighborhood. The message: even a child's holiday can be ruined by politics.

November 2, 2008: Detroit Free Press: On Friday, [Shirley] Nagel had a sign in her Grosse Pointe Farms yard reading: "No handouts for Obama supporters, liars, tricksters or kids of supporters," according to WJBK-TV (Fox2).
When children approached, Nagel quizzed them about their parents' political leanings, [Janette] Fleury said. If they were pro-Obama, Nagel turned them away, she said.


But it didn't stop there. Other neighbors also got involved with the lawnside politicking.

The fire was stoked further when Nagel's next-door neighbor put out a large Obama poster and his own homemade sign promising candy for all.
Nagel told WJBK-TV that "Obama's scary." When asked about children who'd been turned away empty-handed and crying, she said: "Oh, well. Everybody has a choice."


Unfortunately, the two appeared representative of their respective party's promises. McCain's promises only for "their kind", Barack's promises for everyone, and in the end nobody gets anything except the liars and the thieves.

that lady reminds me of the crazy lady we used to have at the end of our block. One year she loaded about sixty mousetraps into her trick or treat bag to ambush the kids, because some assholes ran off with her candy bag the year before. if i recall she always smelled like booze.

I can only assume she lives north of 8 mile.

I've only been to Detroit once but I think Grosse Point is at around 12 or 13 mile road. Detroit is strange. It reminds of the Wizard of Oz. In the city everything is gray and dirty and then at about 10 mile road it turns into lush green and beautiful houses. It's a quick and drastic change.

The Wayne County Recorder's office says Shirley Nagel lives at 465 Belanger Dr, Grosse Point Farms, MI. Prior to that, she lived at 16905 Riverdale Dr in Detroit. However, in May of this year a Certificate of Forfeiture of Real Property was filed by the County, indicating she was forced to relinquist title for some legal reason. In all deeds she is listed as an "unmarried woman"--what a surprise.
