If Romney and Giulanni were such slam dunks they would have been on the top of the Republican ticket, not the opening act. It wasn't like McCain barely eaked out the nomination over either of them. I could see an argument for Jindal or some other new blood besides Palin but I don't think any of the other Republican also-rans would have done anything for McCain.
