I saw Letterman bring up Liddy when he interviewed to McCain, but didn't know to what extent it was true. For the record, I read G.Gordon's autobiography and really liked it. He was talking about how dropping his last superstition (god) and believing in himself made him so much stronger. But now he's a fucking catholic again so he can go fuck himself... http://reason.com/news/show/129615.html

I agree. Every time I see a rat in the subway, I think of that book.

Ain't Obama's fault that Weatherjerks like Mark Rudd, Bernadine Dohrn, and Bill Ayers were essentially given a free pass by the criminal justice justice in the late 70s, back when Obama was still in high school. Chicago's polite society decided to forgive Bernadine Dohrn, and Bill Ayers got to go along for the ride. Ayers was never much more than stunt cock and baby daddy for the radical chic diva Dohrn.

No one says it is.
The criticism is that he chose to launch his first race for elective office in Ayers' living room, and didn't repudiate him after Ayers said "I don't regret setting bombs" and that he and the Weathermen "didn't do enough."
I also get a kick out of Obama's attempt to deny it during the third debate:
McCain: Well, again, while you were on the board of the Woods Foundation, you and Mr. Ayers, together, you sent $230,000 to ACORN. So -- and you launched your political campaign in Mr. Ayers' living room.
Obama: That's absolutely not true.

Politicians are seen as weak when they repudiate their actions, hence the conventional wisdom is to tough it out rather than admit a mistake.

I don't know about that. I think Clinton looked worse when he said "I didn't inhale." And I voted for him twice.
To me, it seems contextual. If you make a habit of it, you'd (rightly) be perceived as a chronic flip-flopper. But if he came out and said something to the effect of "The fund raiser occurred in 1995, six years before he said he 'didn't regret ' the bombings. I condemn those remarks, etc..." I people would be more understanding, and this wouldn't be as big of an issue.
