Today there really is no difference but back when hiphop was actually good, rap was the popular stuff you heard on radio and the gansta music from Ice-Cube, Dre etc while hiphop rarely got nationwide airplay like Digable Planets, Tribe Called Quest, Jeru etc.

Today everyone claims to be hiphop so...
