I'm a Libertarian. If you're not Donkey or Elephant, what are your thoughts on Nov 4?

I am a libertarian myself and I feel like a non-Christian during the Christmas season. Neither the Donkey or Elephant candidate is at all desirable, but a Libertarian president is not going to happen in my lifetime. So do you undervote and not vote for president or do you vote for the least malodorous candidate. I haven't sorted that out yet.

I'm voting. But it pains me to make the choice I've had to come to...

The Libertarian candidate is a former Ultra-Conservative Republican Congressman from Georgia who disavowed most of the principles he stood for to accept the nomination.
The Green candidate is a former Ultra-Liberal Democratic Congresswoman from Georgia who... how do I put this politely? She's batshit crazy.
Then there's Ralph Nader, who is running as an independent.
Even the third-party candidates suck ass.

JimB...I totally agree. I won't be voting Lib, but I do believe in the principles of the party. As I was watching the VP debate, I broke out in hives. IN HIVES on my chest, I was so nervous and upset by the scope of what I was witnessing. I'm terrified of what is before me, and that really bothers me. I don't want to be close to tears while watching a fucking VP fucking debate. I started drinking, felt better.

I'm a Libertarian and Jim's analysis is right on the money with the possible exception that batshit is a much more sensible choice than McKinney. We're fucked but I will still vote. I haven't made up my mind yet but if there is a way to write-in Ron Paul I will probably do so. I'm not sure how or if they do write-ins with electronic ballots though.

Yeah. I haven't written in a vote since Dinkins-Giuliani II in 1993. We're supposed to have new machines in New York this year. I need to call the Board of Elections sometime this week.

I really like Ralph. Sorry guys, but he impresses me. We have a federal election looming in our fair land as well. As stated before, I will cast my vote for the Marijuana Party candidate in my riding....

If I get around to registering it will be as an independent however I do not know which person will get my first presidential vote since John Anderson ran for the white house.

I've sorted it out: you vote any checkbox _but_ the one containing the name of a certain power-drunk fundamentalist minivan mom that's made a career of sneaking up the ladder of authority one step at a time while no one paid attention. Let's pay attention this time.
I was at the fed state department building in L.A. recently and it was disheartening to see posted notices urging that U.S. related emblems, flags and symbols be concealed or removed from items before traveling abroad. Pretty embarrassing to have to hide the country I'm from.
Leaders that practice or contribute even in small ways to isolationism and lack of regard for what other countries think of us is not a good long-term strategy.
Obama has at least vowed to keep an open mind and sit with adversarial nations. That'd be my strategy. Go to Iran, have dinner with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, get him drunk (he doesn't drink - we'll change that), hold his hand, stroke his cheek, find out his favorite color, find out what he recalls as the earliest memory of childhood. Keep him close, real close. Rinse/cycle/repeat for all the other nuts.

Anti-americanism has been around in Europe for at least 100 years. The muslims started calling USA the great Satan soon after Israel was founded. South and central America inhabitants despited gringos long before any of us were born. But yeah it's all Bush's fault.
Oh and yeah, taking to tyrants has always been a good strategy.'Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.'

Yeah, can you imagine what would have happened if an american president had talked to the ruthless dictators of the USSR and China? Oh wait....

There are many reasons why it makes no sense to compare talks with Kruschev and Mao with possible talks with Ahmadenijad. Contemporary Iran is nothing like Communist China or the Soviet Union.
To answer the original question of this thread, I'm a Libertarian and have been for close to six years. Before that, I was very much a Republican from the Reagan/Goldwater wing, not the Rockefeller country club wing. As hard as it is to vote for a candidate who has no chance of winning, I've decided it is better to vote one's conscience than to merely choose between the lesser of two evils. In 2008 I believe McCain is the lesser of two evils and there is no way he is getting my vote.

I'm a Libertarian who re-registered as a Democrat so I could vote for Obama in the Pennsylvania primary. Once I vote for Obama again, I'll be switching back to Libertarian.
My main reason for voting the way that I am...we need a drastic change in this country and I'm not sure another old Republican is the answer. In effect, I feel that I'm choosing youth and fresh ideas over "stay the course". Would McCain be a terrible President...probably not, but I think we need an opposite of who we already have in office, and in my opinion, Obama fits the bill.

Well, with a left wing President and a left controlled Congress, you're going to get "change".
A shitload of it.
And none of it will be even remotely Libertarian.

I disagree. If McCain wins, both houses of Congress will be controlled by Democrats, and with fairly large majorities. How does such a split government, with both parties checking each other, qualify as "extreme."

What's shakin' Jim? On some of the bigger issues I'd use the word "extreme" to describe the candidate's stances...first and foremost, the war in Iraq. One wants a timetable for withdrawl, and one wants to stay there until we decide we're finished. I agree with Obama on this issue, so to me, McCain is the other extreme. I'm sure to a McCain supporter, Obama's stance would also constitute an extreme.

Ahhh. You're right, the candidates themselves represent opposite extremes on many issues. But having the executive and legislative branches in different hands would allow for a bit of moderation between said extremes.

I'm usually registered as a Green, though I switched to Republican shortly when a friend ran in a congressional primary down here. I wrote in Nader in 2004 on one of these crazy dial/computer voting booths where it took three minutes to type every letter in with this stupid dial. I will be voting for Obama this year; I wasn't a fan of his at the start but changed my mind right around the Iowa Caucus and the more I read up on him. Usually I could reason that a vote for an independent in California doesn't really matter due to the Electoral College breakdown and the Dems always winning, but this year I feel Obama's earned my vote and its at least one more vote in the popular vote tally.

Small dick, no backbone and a law degree. In other words, an ideal candidate for Congress.
