I'd say "I'm surprised", but I'd be lying. they're probably preaching to the choir anyway. I doubt there are too many people, not left of center, waiting with baited breath for the newest volume of RS looking for unbiased political coverage.
"His calmness is reflected in the smooth and controlled campaign he is overseeing. In conversation, his thoughtfulness is punctuated by an easy wit, much as his clockwork campaign is a stage for his eloquence and charismatic gifts as a leader.
I am often asked, "What's he like?" If you really want to know, read Dreams From My Father. It's all in there, and it's a wonderful piece of writing in its own right.
When we are done, his parting words are delivered with a dazzling smile: "OK, brother — take care.""

I quit reading Rolling Stone about the time I quit filing the 1040EZ... a long time ago.
I did buy the big anniversary issue with the 3d cover and give it to my failed hippy father a couple years ago, though.

Anyone remember the McCain R.S. cover story back around 2000 when he was going up against Bush? They didn't consider him to be a monster back then. Expecting Rolling Stone to do a story that is fair and unbiased to Republicans is like expecting Joan Crawford to write a story that is fair and unbiased to wire hangers.

Yeah RS is skewed to a college aged crowd. A lot of these issues about McSame's past are already out there and are coming out. Three crashes early in his career led Navy officials to question or fault his judgment. McCain08 is failing massively and there is no reason to believe he is going to somehow rescue his campaign in the debates. Because of this you can expect them to get even deeper in the character attacks. I am glad to see the other side fighting back in the character wars because McCain has a lot in his past that would have been brought out by now if he was on the other side and which i am sure were by Rush and company when he was running against bush in 00. p.s. - killer post bornyo

Correct, which leads me to this question: What does pro-Obama pundit-touting have to do with John McCain the man and his record? Can McCain and his record not stand alone? Must his record never be judged as simply what it is -- a clear and definitive tally of the legislative decisions he's made to date -- and nothing more?
The arguments that Obama is too liberal and that he lacks the experience one would need to run the U.S. are very fair, and, rightfully, he's had to spend the better part of this campaign season addressing them. And, of course, Reverend Wright. All fair game, and he should be forced to address the Wright issue in particular till he's horse and blue (or more purple) in the face.
I get why conservatives are annoyed with the unrelenting pro-Obama (pro-blank slate) press coverage, I really do. I lean left, and even I’m annoyed by it. Still, McCain and his record should get a free pass because a number of pundits and a shitload of easily moved, starry-eyed college students happen to be secreting love juice all over themselves in support of the black guy with big ears? Seems a little ridiculous.
And don't even get me started on that nutbar Palin.

Random, did you read the article in the New Times about McCain by Amy Silverman? I remember the incident with Barry Goldwater, tho I was just a foolish Brophy boy at the time.
I did not. You got a link?

Palin is smart. She is new to national issues, and a right wing nut job. But she isn't stupid. Shows what kind of people would be in positions of authority and responsibility in a McCain administration -Chuck, Vegetarian fanboy

This chunk is amusing:
"Even his friends seemed to dislike him, with one recalling him as "a mean little fucker."
McCain was not only a lousy student, he had his father's taste for drink and a darkly misogynistic streak. The summer after his sophomore year, cruising with a friend near Arlington, McCain tried to pick up a pair of young women. When they laughed at him, he cursed them so vilely that he was hauled into court on a profanity charge."
McCain in '08: "I'm a mean little fucker!"
