A book can be any length, you can explore many more characters and situations and do as much back story as you want whereas a film is very limited by time constraints (especially today). Also when you adapt a book, you have to include about 40% original material (industry standard) unless you get the author to write your screenplay.
Your next question should be why do the Serbs seem to not suffer such text-to-film translations as the Yanks.
