Ok people, suck it up and read the following article, dont be intimdated by the language, or concepts or length...it is an excellent breakdown of what is going on in the economy, what future risks still exist and also, some glimmers of hope. Read for your own edification, as well as peace of mind....and then I am going to be discussing what I THINK of the current situation.

Burg is here to Help XPTs throng remain solvent so that they can continue to purchase PORN, and lap dances, and the odd hooker or two for those special moments of horniness....I really really really am here to help.

I actually took a survey on this one. Here's the results:

  • pipsqueak - 0
  • kos boy - 1
  • missy -2
  • belaborator – 4
  • undecided -1
  • write-in vote: “mini-gunker” -1

I actually like "barf-vader," but I think that's more appropriate towards Mr. Knocks.

It's a nice article. I understand what they wrote, but I can't judge if they have everything correct. Am looking forward to Burg's comments on it.

Side note: I read an article in a Dutch paper, that suggested that the 'capitalist economy of the US' is slowly swinging towards a 'government supported socialist economy'. (Because of the (huge) investments made by the government that, at least, reek of nationalisation of certain parts of the economy.) Comments please, Burg, Willie?

The only way belaborator could ever be called "undecided" is if Markos Moulitsas dropped dead mid-rant.

As I've stated in another thread, the govt. intervention is not a nationalization of any part of the economy. It is simply an expedient and orderly way for the assets of failed financial institutions to be sold off. It isn't like the BBC.

I see some of the European media like Der Speigel has declared the current financial system crisis as the end of American capitalism. They wish.

I'm curious about something. The bailouts this year are presently over $600 billion. Our federal deficit for last year was over $400 billion if my memory serves correct. So a little 1st grade math makes me think that the deficit for 2008 will be over $1 trillion dollars. Assuming of course that our deficit in other areas is similar, and there is no evidence to suggest otherwise.

How in the fuck does an economy survive will a $1 trillion dollar deficit? I know that supply sider's think that deficits don't matter. But $1 trillion, that doesn't matter?

Bush has been a massive failure of a president. But I wonder if his legacy will be an unnecessary war in Iraq or sending our country into another Great Depression.

What the government is doing is not bailing out these companies. The government is in effect acquiring these companies in order to sell off their assets.

As for supply-siders saying deficits don't matter, you are wrong. It is actually more of a Keynesian approach to run long-term large deficits. In truth, there is no great sin in running budget deficits as long as the debt service ratio is not too great. Remember, many successful corporations operate with long-term debt. Debt is cheaper than equity, so it makes sense to operate on a deficit as long as the debt can be serviced.

Says the guy who doesn't get how it might be instructive to recall what FDR did during the depression when talking about the worst economic crisis since the depression.

I suppose Markos hasn't told you how to respond to that, yet.

Some of the New Deal helped. Some was overkill. The point is that it's curious how belaborator doesn't get the parallel between liberal icon FDR's appointment of a crook to run the SEC and McCain's reliance upon another crook as his economic advisor. Just like he doesn't get the parallel between Palin's church of hate and Obama's church of hate.

Markos isn't spelling things out for him all that well, it seems.

If WWII was part of the New Deal, then yes, the New Deal helped. When Pearl Harbor was bombed, FDR had been in office almost 9 years, yet the unemployment rate was still around 15%.

I disagree with most of what you said here. The government did not buy AIG and will receive no return on that money. Selling off assets is not how I would characterize any of the bailouts this year. Supply side economics is the corner stone of Republican policy since Reagan. Hence the elder Bush's famous "voodoo economics" quote. (I can't hear that without thinking of Ferris Bueller)

And lastly, I don't think any economist was thinking of debts this large when they developed their theory.

Speaking of crooked SEC Chairmen...

Glad to see McCain has turned so violently on Chris Cox, who I had the *pleasure* of calling my congressman most of my life. This is a guy who pretty much shared most of his beliefs with McCain from Homeland Security to regulation; now McCain viciously wants him out?

Glad to know he's so quick to never say a word about their performance then throw that friend so fast under the bus.

Service on the debt is now around 25% he total annual federal outlay. That is way too much. Especially with a decreasing tax base due to reduced consumer spending and higher unemployment (less people to pay income taxes).

Why is it that people like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett support keeping taxes on wealthy people, and McJane thinks this is about the worst idea ever? Answer: all of his family's wealth comes from his wife's AB distributorship in Arizona, and he'll have to pony up when papa Hensley dies.

+1 Bill Gates for president...the nerd is just about the only person left on the planet with nothing to worry about, hence is in perfect condition/mindset to FIX shit and make the decisions that need to be made. HE STILL FLIES COACH....of course, he rarely needs to go anywhere, but still...Warren is ok, but like McKook, too old....

I am more than willing to pay my FAIR share of taxes (READ THAT, you fucking IRS mosquitoes!?!) ... this whole republican mantra of always wanting lower taxes is totally fucking bananas...JACK the fucking taxes up on the RICH, leave the middle class and poor alone beyond a certain reasonable level, and start Jamming it to Exxon and their crowd.

THIS CANNOT GO ON PEOPLE...it is that simple. 25% of Federal outlay AND CLIMBING FASTER than anything else....I hope I am alive for when the SHIT hits the fan....from Der Burglar Bunker, I will be shooting all the looters, lobbing shells at the raving mobs looking for food, and then descending down into my Bunker to FUCK one of the 27 specially screened and selected whores I choose to have with me during the apocalypse.

Note to self: Must give Gigi directions to the bunker and the super secret password.

You're all fucked.

interesting analysis on how Democrats have historically run more efficient governments with lower deficits and smaller gov'ts than the Republicans.

Agreed - Hitler was the best thing that ever happened to FDR.

The Crash happened early in Hoover's term and he tried a lot of things for over three years before FDR came along. Most of the things that worked for FDR were actually ideas Hoover had used with some success: FDR (Harry Hopkins) just renamed the agencies and fired everyone who voted wrong.

In truth there isn't much Hoover or FDR could have done after Smoot-Hawley kneecapped trade (the stock market and business activity had mostly recovered in the six months after the Crash, until Smoot-Hawley).
