the fams and i are planning (or planning to plan) a long weekend to D.C. in about a month or so. i have never been there... any ideas on where to stay/eat/etc.? i have absolutely no one to ask, so any advice at all would be soooooooo helpful and appreciated, even if it's just places to avoid. just logged onto travelocity with our basic dates, etc. and so far the Hamilton Crowne Plaza looks nice... ????. sho'nuff, stoli, all of you traveling perverts? & thank you in advance.

I would say to stay in DuPont circle. There are tons of hotels and night spots around there. Try the rouge hotel.

Gigi, I work in Dupont Circle. It's a heavenly place to shop, eat. I recommend staying at The Madison. It's reasonably priced for a bit of opulence and not chain-feeling.
For funsies, I do like the trolley tours that go to Arlington, all the monuments, shyt like that.
To eat:
Russia House
Levantes (greek)
Citronelle (if you're rich)
Blue Duck Tavern
Lavandou
La Chaumiere (again, if you're rich)
Shopping...one word: Georgetown. Spend as much time as you can there, I like to stalk the house Jackie Kennedy used to live in.
Visit the Embessies. As many as you can!
So much to do...I can send you a message with a complete itinerary if you want cuz I'm Type A like that.

1. Watch the HBO series John Adams before you go. You'll have a much better understanding of how it all came to be. 2. Spend an entire day on the National Mall. You'll never get through it all, but it's a noble effort. If you stay at the Mayflower, you can walk to the Mall via a very nice  neighborhood in between. 3. Visit the National Archives and view the Declaration of Independence (see #1). If you don't get a she-boner from that, call me so I can arrange to have you spayed.

The Smithsonian is a must. The Air & Space Museum is a must. The Jefferson Memorial is a must- a good place to take your lunch and catch your breath and look back at it all. You have to walk the Mall. The Capitol is cool but if the kids are so young it will probably be enough just to take them up the steps- same with the White House- a walk-by may satisfy them. The Washington Monument is a favorite- it involves an elevator ride to top.

I somehow had to go to DC 3 times when I was a kid. My only lasting memories are the Air and Space museum (fucken sick) and some nigger trying to knock my old mans Nikon off his shoulder.
In more recent news my kid went on a school(I paid $300.00) "sponsored" trip last year and he bitched about all the walking/point droning on and assorted frivolousness
that most 11 yr olds would perceive a "tour" to be.
Astronauts, The Declaration, and the White House are cool.
Anything else and you might want to plan some roller coaster/pool time in between.

The Smithsonian is my favorite capital destination. Seeing The Declaration of Independence at the National Archives is something that ought to be done, although it is not in the best of shape, it is the founding document of our country, and worth seeing. The memorials to FDR and the veterans of World War II, Korea, and the Vietnam memorial are proximate to each other, and ought to be high on the list. Farther afield, but still very important IMO is the Arlington National Cemetery, inclusive of the Iwo Jima Memorial and the Kennedy gravesite.

don't forget the Holocaust Museum......it is really good......doing things in DC is pretty cheap as most of the stuff to do is free......and yes public transit is really cheap so don't be afraid to stay in the DC suburbs and commute in....I did that for a spring break trip with the bf @ time and we had a blast
if you know politics and recognize people.....go to Congressman/Senators office...get tickets to sit in a session (boring) but cool thing to do if for nothing but a moment to see......but take the train from office building to Capital building you will see lots of politicians if they are in session at the time....
the FBI tour is really amazing
DO NOT TOUR THE PENTAGON.......too boring
and I must back up another post.....SPEND LOTS OF TIME IN THE NATIONAL MALL.....

The Spy Museum is right near the FBI, but it's probably not of interest to the tots. I was afraid to go in the FBI building- I think they take your DNA as you enter. (j/k, but it made me paranoid). My son and I sat on a wall in the sun, outside by the sidewalk and some security goon came and made us move. Fuckers.

If your into watching the blowhards at their best....request a seat from your congressman to set in on the senate or the house....I think they still allow it.
I am not too sure if the A&S museum is done as of yet---http://www.nasm.si.edu/museum/udvarhazy/ its out by (IAD) or john foster dulles int airport....this is the one not one the mall....
Stay out of anacostia after dark.....and if you want classy dancers Camelot on "m" st....or good guys on Wisconsin Ave.
I dont know if its still around but there is a great hotel overlooking the city....http://www.savoysuites.com/
top level rooms when I was there had Jacuzzi tubs in select guest rooms.....
just watch out for the popo...there EVERYwhere......I used to fuck with them......when ever I was on the highways.....I would speed by WMATA (local Transit authority) cops....and MP's going to and from Military and the FPS cops.....Federal protective service cops (golyfied GSA buliding police) reservations

I accidentally went into a black strip club in NW mind you.....and it was just like a scene out of a movie.....the record stopped, dancer stopped dancing and the crowd stared at me....

Areas to stay in NW, SW is ok.....NE borderline....SE only during the day.
Another great place to go and see a show if your lucky....Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts...even if you dont go to see someting its got great architecture for its time....If you like animals.....check out the washington dc zoological park.
in a lighter note.....check out the Wasington Vista hotel [Now The Westin Washington, D.C. City Center] (forgot what room)....if its still around.....this where the FBI busted Marion Shepilov Barry, Jr then Mayor of the District of Columbia for smokin rock and also they have some really nice presidential suites (one on each floor) naturally with a "lot" of room.

+1 for the Kenndy Center recommendation. The DC Zoo is not bad, and the walk to it from the metro is nice. Really one of the best things about D.C., in my opinion, is the abundance of very good ethnic restaurants. Pretty much any type of food you want to try you can find an upscale place catering to it. I don't know how old the kids are, but if they are over 12 or so and you are mildly adventurous eaters I cannot recommend enough visiting Marrakesh ( http://www.marrakesh.us/); it is one of our favorite places to go for an evening. The meal itself will take over two hours (7 courses of culinary heaven) and the belly dancing show is usually very good. Depending on how long you are in town for, and if you have a rental car, I would also recommend taking some day trips to Baltimore and Annapolis as well (each no more than 30-45 minutes away).

we've never stayed anywhere longer than three days. three days is my husband's official vacation time limit. he can't stand spending money. anything longer than seventy-two hours straight of him spending money and i'm fairly certain he would have a stroke. *note to self: schedule next vacation for four days*

hey bitches! just got back from D.C.; wanted to thank all of you from the vacation advice. we had a blast... georgetown was just SICK, the korean war memorial made me cry, vietnam war memorial kind of sucks, the five year-old almost fell into the reflecting pool= comedy... the kids' favorite places were the air & space and natural history museums-- well, those and the food court at the ronald reagan complex  . we took the metro--first time the kids had been on a subway, which was cool... took one of those open-top bus tours (with the company charin recommended; thank you) and got whacked in the head with a tree branch somewhere in kalorama. watched "tropic thunder" on pay-per-view in our hotel room and fell asleep by 9:30 every night. thanks to stoli, sho'nuff, bornyo, willie, dino, xxxhibit, charin, and everybody else who had ideas. by the time we got there, i already kind of felt like i knew what i was doing. well until the tree branch knocked me out, anyway.
