"College presidents from about 100 of the nation's best-known universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus.
The movement called the Amethyst Initiative began quietly recruiting presidents more than a year ago to provoke national debate about the drinking age."

If you're old enough to have your head blown off by an angry Persian, than you are OLD enough for an Amstel Light in a goddamn bar.

comparing the social drinking of wine at mealtime in france and parties/keggers/rush/mixers of u.s. colleges and universities isn't even in the same universe. if their theory was true students over 21 wouldn't binge drink, amirite? so do you think 21+ students don't binge drink on campus?

I think that over the years (after the eradication of MADD and a few deaths of some stupid kids)...yeah, it would be like it is in France. That is MY opinion about what I saw as an underaged girl able to "drink" for the "first time" and how I handled it. I think it would be the same here after a few years.

While I agree, this argument won't get it passed. Here's why: They used the same argument to get the voting age lowered to 18 in the early seventies. The difference then was there was a draft. Since Nixon needed the bodies, they had no choice but to ratify the Twenty-Sixth Amendment. Because we currently have an all-volunteer military, there isn't the pressure to use the same argument, valid though it is.

I'd be interested in knowing if the presidents of the Universities of Florida and Georgia are among those on board. Nothing at all hypocritical about the presidents of two universities who play a football game every year that is known and marketed as The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party (Played in Jacksonville, Florida which makes it hard for students of these universities to attend without hopping behind the wheel of a car.) joining the fight to stop binge drinking.

I don't think it will reduce binge drinking. It will just reduce the age in which binge drinking begins.
High school kids already know what 7-11 to go get their beer. There is as much binge drinking in high schools as there is in college.
I actually agree that the drinking age needs to be lowered. But I also think the driving age needs to be raised.

this is my last post in this thread because this shit is silly stupid. chlstli, you dodged my question above about college students older than 21 that binge drink. what's the answer for them? lowering the age limit? and again, with all due respect, fuck france, that has zero relevance to this argument. as I said before, the acceptance of social drinking of wine by minors or otherwise at mealtime in frogland doesn't equate to anything here on u.s. college campuses
binge drinking in college has nothing to do with age or the legality/illegality of it. it's the environment. all nighters, socials, raids, whatever. the legal age to consume alcohol could be 5yo and it still wouldn't matter. freshmen will be getting hazed to suck down maddog 40/40 regardless and raising or lowering the legal age won't curtail binge drinking one iota.
I'm not trying to offend. Perhaps my experience was different, because I was around pretty mature-acting college students my whole tenure at university. Maybe it wouldn't change the fact that there are 21+ who binge, and hell, 40+ who do for that matter (at college bars, usually, hehe). But I think it might change SOME students' perspective...maybe make them see that it's not really something sneaky and wrong and they need to pile it in as much as possible.
And I love France. I love that country. It doesn't offend me if you don't, though.
