OK so this is kind of a weird question for XPT but since we've got all kinds here, some of who seem to be pretty well traveled/knowledgeable, here goes. I'm traveling to Scotland for two weeks in early October, by myself. I plan to start in Edinburgh and then drive through the countryside in a big loop, ending in Glasgow, from where I will fly home. I already have a tentative itinerary but if anyone has been and can give me any suggestions, it would be much appreciated! Keep in mind that I no longer drink so pub crawling is not an option, and I'm mostly interested in the historical sites.

Edinburgh is rich with historical sites...although I guess it depends on what sort of sites you are interested in looking at? Castles, locations from 'Trainspotting' or something different?
Be advised: Both Edinburgh and Glasgow are/can be as rough as fuck, although seeing as you won't be going out drinking in the evenings, you should hopefully avoid the worst of it.

I spend 3-4 months in Scotland each year. You will be there just before the weather turns a bit nasty for the season.
No idea what you enjoy, but since you say you'll be going alone, I'm thinking solitude is something you are after? If you are feeling the least bit adventurous, drive up to Loch Lomond and rent a small rowboat from any number of establishments on the shores. Loch Lomond has more islands than any other Loch in Scotland, many of which are believed to be man-made and dating back to pre-historic times. At any rate, row out to one (easy to do) and you'll find yourself on a moss-covered piece of land with tall trees and not a soul around. Take a picnic lunch and a bottle of wine. Very nice way to enjoy the day.

i wish i could help but i ran out of ideas the second you said you were staying on the wagon.... I can however say from experience that you are fucking crazy going to the UK in Oct. But, there is still some beautiful scenery up there... take a trip out to Hadrian's Wall if you get the chance. Just bring lots of warm clothing....

What? The entire social scene in Scotland is at the pub. Scots have breakfast in a pub. You have to at least go to the pub once- if anything else just to meet some local people.
As far as traveling you should try checking out Aberdeen since there's some interesting places to hit up such as St. Machar's Cathedral (if you're into architecture), His Majesty's Theatre, Aberdeen Maritime Museum, Snafu @ Belmont Street (this is a bar and yes, I'm advising you to hit this joint up. They feature lots of live gigs and you're sure to run into something) and definitely go to Duthie Park Winter Gardens (you will thank me for this one).
I'm not sure if you're into sports or not but I wouldn't advise going to places like the stadiums especially when you're chopping it up with an Americana accent.
Now, if you really want to be adventurous travel to Langside and find the Carmelite Monastery. No, this isn't a joke. Monasteries are the shit. You'll love it. Trust me.
Last but not least (though very naughty) hit up Club Noir in Glasgow. I know a dame that works here and fashions these giant tits. Oh la la.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask. Me mom goes to Scotland all the time for some quality R&R alone.
Oh, and if you like old cemeteries hit up Gorbals, Forge, Springburn, Dalbeth or St Peters all in Glasgow. Take a paper and pencil and shade away (forgot what this is called but we did it all the time as kids).

Holly, you could also try a little bit of porno industry networking...Harmony's Gazzman is from Scotland, so could probably give you a few pointers and tips. Hit him up on MySpace, or maybe Tricia D. can give you his email.

If you're interested in any "Davinci Code" bullshit you could visit Rosslyn Chapel. See if you can talk them into letting you dig into the crypt for the Holy Grail. Official website

Wow you guys have been more helpful than all the travel books and sites I've been to! I LOVE cemeteries, so I'll definitely check those out. And yes castles and anything medieval is what I'm interested in. These are the cities I plan to visit: Edinburgh, Stirling, Fort William, Inverness, Aberfoyle, Aberdeen, and Glasgow. This might change a bit as my research develops, but we'll see.
I agree I should check out some of the pubs, especially if there is live music. I just have to be careful, that's all, since this is my first major trip on my own, sober.

Check out www.tripadvisor.com too. They seem to have enough reviews of most places to be helpful. (i.e., enough to filter out the bullshit and spam).

HA! good luck with that. Glasgow is like Amsterdam, and Belmont Street in Aberdeen is where it's at as far as pubs and restaurants.
Some good eateries I recommend are The Bothy in Aberdeen, The Prestoungrange Gothenburg (for some old fashioned type Scot dining) located in East Edinburgh and the The Garvald Inn in Haddington.
Castles? Hit up Edinburgh Castle, Craignethan Castle in Lanarkshire, St. Andrews in Fife, Kilchurn Castle in Loch, Dryburgh Abbey, Findlater Castle in Aberdeenshire, Culross Palace in Fife, Stirling Castle and of course Roslin.
If you can, or have time, mos def try and go to Iona Abbey. It's one of the oldest and most important religious centers in Western Europe.

Are you into architecture? I think Scotland has some nice cistercian abbeys that would make for dramatic photos. Never been there, but sure hope to make it there some day.

I just found out that I have an extra day in Scotland (the panel I'm speaking on in Manchester-- the whole reason I'm going out to the UK-- is going to be a day earlier) so where should I spend it? Edinburgh or Glasgow? Right now I'm planning on staying in both cities for 3 nights, but which one should I choose to spend 4 nights in? Any suggestions?

Well, there's a nice small township/city in betwixt Glasgow and Edinburgh named Livingston, and I once knew a very nice and quite lovely nurse named Molly who worked in the E.R. down in Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach back in 1998-1999. She was the kindest most compassionate nurse I have ever met with the most adorable accent. When you are in a typical Newport Beach bar like Malarkey's or Blackie's and everyone is speaking in that sickening So Cal Surfer twang "Yo dude, let's play pool, I totally Shred you!", a melodic scottish accent sounds like heaven. Anyway, she went back home in early 2000 to work in a maternity clinic in Livingston or nearby....
Supposedly, Livingston has the LARGEST Shopping Mall in Scotland that is very popular with tourists and travelers in between Edinburgh and Glasgow so check it out, might be a nice change of pace from the larger cities and let you spend a day in a modern MALL shopping in the midst of all your ancient sight seeing.... and besides, I never got to thank her for the handjob she gave me after I had a severe laceration on my right hand and couldnt whack off for a week and a half. If I sent you 20 pounds Sterling would you buy whatever flowers are indigenous to Scotland and visit every maternity clinic in Livingston until you found a nurse named Molly with Dark Brown hair and blue eyes? Ask her what the sign in Blackie's Pub in Newport used to say to verify it's her please.....(sign says "Sorry, we are OPEN") Holly I would be eternally grateful and spend the rest of my days singing your praises.

Thanks for everyone's help on planning this trip, I'm in Edinburgh right now, and I'm loving it! I'm here for 2 more nights and then I'm off traveling through the highlands, and then finishing up in Glasgow. If anyone cares to keep track of my travels, I've been keeping my blog updated almost every day. There are pictures if you don't want to read my boring drivel.

Where's Holly? She should have been back a couple of weeks ago.
Did you have a good time?
