I felt sorry for the couple of hundred cheerleader chicks that lined the inside track during the two hour march pass who had to maintain a cheery non-stop boot-scoot with fixed smiles. They probably had some 90 year old choreographer yelling at them for the past six years telling them they are lucky little bitches that have it too good and that they do not know the meaning of sore feet until they have marched several thousand miles across mountains hotly pursued by raping and pillaging Nationalist forces.

BEIJING -- The male relative of an American men's volleyball coach was fatally stabbed today around 12:30 p.m. (local time) inside a major tourist site by a knife-wielding Chinese man who was also inside visiting the site, Chinese authorities said.

A female relative of the coach was seriously injured, and a female Chinese tour guide also suffered injuries from the attack by the same man, officials said.

The names of the American victims and the Chinese tour guide have not been released. Chinese officials identified the assailant as Tang Yongming, 47, who comes from the eastern city of Hangzhou, and authorities said the man jumped to his death from the second floor of the tower after the attack.

The alleged attack took place inside the Drum Tower, a 13th century imperial structure just north of the Forbidden City. The motive for the attack remains unclear.

US Embassy and Olympic committee officials said they were awaiting details of the incident. Chinese and US authorities have said so far there is no indication the victim was attacked because of nationality or because of the Olympics.

Yesterday afternoon outside the Drum Tower, a popular tourist attraction surrounded by traditional alley-style hutong dwellings, some residents and shopkeepers said they heard that the Chinese man may have gotten into an argument with the American before stabbing him and that he never jumped outside the tower. Others said they heard about a suicidal jump. Because the alleged attack took place inside the tower, none of the local residents or store owners said they witnessed anything that triggered the incident other than ambulances with sirens arriving around 12:30 p.m.

"When I arrived to work at noon, nothing had happened," said a cleaning lady at a linen store.

Many neighbors declined to discuss anything about what they know or saw, amid the swarm of international media that arrived at the scene within a couple of hours of the alleged incident.

"We know some things but we can't talk," said one resident. Throughout this site, police officers were stationed, as well as neighborhood security volunteers who seemed to be watching closely who was talking to reporters.

One neighbor, who gave only his surname as Zhang, said he is deeply saddened by the attack given that it took place just after China staged a glorious opening ceremony on Friday. He said attacks by Chinese on others are very rare in Beijing.

"In normal life, these kinds of things seldom happen," he said.

Though he had no first-hand knowledge of what happened, Zhang said he heard the attacker jumped to this death, and probably has "psychological problems."

Richard Buangan, spokesman for the US Embassy in Beijing, said his office is working with Chinese authorities and the victim's families. Embassy officials were immediately on scene, and currently some are with the victim's families in the hospital. It remains unclear the degree of injury to the two other Americans -- one of whom was another relative of the coach and another a tour guide -- and where they are currently being treated.

Darryl Seibel, a US Olympic Committee spokesman, said he has no confirmation that the Americans who were visiting the Drum Tower were related or married. He said they were not wearing any clothes that would have identified them as Americans.

"It's far too early to suggest that this has anything to do with the Olympics taking place," he said. "We have no idea what the motivation is."

The US men's volleyball team is scheduled to play its first game at 10 p.m. (local time) today against Venezuela.

Spain's Olympic basketball team posed for an advertisement prior to the Games which appears to show all its players slanting their eyes, a move that could offend its Olympic hosts in Beijing. The ads, for a Spanish courier company, appeared in the Spanish-language newspaper La Marca.


As the uproar over the picture has grown today, more information about the advertising shot has come to light. The ad was sponsored by a Spanish courier company, Seur. Spain's team, ironically, also is sponsored by Li-Ning Footwear, a Chinese company founded by Li Ning, the final torchbearer who was hoisted along the top of Beijing National Stadium during the Olympic Opening Ceremony finale.

The Spanish-language paper El Mundo has a piece debating whether the ad was racist that basically calls out the British press for trying to smear Spain's good name. But they miss the point. Whether the picture was made in good fun is irrelevant. It was a ridiculous idea that was bound to upset a lot of people.

It's baffling that nobody involved in the picture -- from the photographers to the players -- even seemed to consider that this ad would be looked at negatively. Did it not occur to somebody that it might not be a good idea to mock a large portion of the continent before the world's largest athletic competition that, by the way, happens to take place on that continent. Were they not aware of an invention called "the Internet" that allows pictures taken in Spain to be transmitted all over the world for the eyes of everyone?

And now that the inevitable controversy has hit, they're still defending themselves when a simple, "the ad was in poor taste, we apologize" would have sufficed. This story would be slowing down if the Spanish Basketball team had apologized immediately. Now it's just picking up steam.

The Organization of Chinese-Americans has released multiple statements condemning the picture. George Wu, deputy director of the group, said, "it is unfortunate that this type of imagery would rear its head during something that is supposed to be a time of world unity." Response in Beijing has been muted so far.

Madrid is thought to be one of the frontrunners to land the 2016 Summer Games (the site will be announced next year). Could this controversy hurt Spain's chances of landing another Olympics?

Interestingly, the Spanish basketball team took on China tonight, winning 85-75 in overtime. No word on whether Pau Gasol was on the receiving end of any elbows from Yao Ming. The Chinese crowd did have a message for the Spaniards though, booing vigorously during the game.

I'm watching my recording of the USA -vs- Aussie softball game now, Cat Osterman looks like she got NO sleep the night before! But, I already know she throws a no hitter.

I have been a women's fastpitch fan for about 10 years now, it is a great game. These women play hard and smart, it is a game dominated by pitching and defense, and every play is important. I get to go to Akron once in a while, and I've seen a lot of these USA players in person. They rock! I even got to see Michelle Smith pitch a couple innings, and saw Lisa Fernandez hit a home run. And, of course, Bustos.

I love to watch every pitch of the Women's College World Series.

I predict a USA sweep. And no runs scored against them.

Too bad, no softball in 2012. I hope they get it back in 2016.

Nuveman is up now. I've seen Johnny Bench and I've seen Stacy Nuveman, and I can't say which one is better, or which one I enjoyed more.
