Hatfill *was* a leading researcher with access to the bacteria. The FBI appears to have gotten it right at the start that it was certainly a researcher or tech at that lab. Unfortunately there are a *lot* of those people, many dozens or more, and it seems they never had reason to pick Hatfill out of that group.

Now we have to wait and see why they're fixated on the dead guy, beyond the fact he can't sue and embarrass them like Hatfill did. They're touting that they traced the particular strain back to the lab - which was already known. Since a mass murderer isn't likely to sign a log sheet for the samples used, and log sheets probably aren't reliable for workers who handle the stuff daily anyway, it's hard to see how they get from "this lab" to "that guy" with only log sheets.
