The FBI had just replaced everyone working on the case for lack of results. One of the few people known who could have done it dies. Suddenly the new guys, knowing da Boss wants an answer and that dead men don't get trials and the right to cross-examine, announce that the one guy who can't refute them is the one that did it? Good enough to close the case and ask da Boss for a promotion I suppose...
The man in charge of the lab says he wants to see evidence before we close the books on this one. I agree.
PS. I don't buy at all that this guy was whacky yet the FBI never caught on for *years* that he might be a suspect. That makes no sense.
