I went to Disneyland today, for the first time since I was a very young girl. Though I had a great time, it was weird to go on the same rides that seemed so fantastical to me the last time I'd visited them. The Haunted House wasn't scary anymore, and The Pirates of the Carribean (which had been my favorite ride) just wasn't as real. Having had the veil of childish innocence lifted from my eyes by the cruel reality of growing up, Disneyland just wasn't as magical.
When I was in Fantasyland, shopping at the Princess store for my friend's little girl, all I could do was look at the images of Snow White, Ariel, and Cinderella with their princes, and think how these fairy tales set up little girls for unrealistic expectations when it comes to romantic relationships. Will I ever see the world through rose-coloured glasses again?
Well, at least the cotton candy tastes the same, though I can't eat the whole thing or my stomach will hurt.
But the princess dresses definitely don't fit me anymore.

When you see all that Little Mermaid/ Snow White stuff, do you think " Gee, I wonder how many of these have been made into pornos?"

Goddamn you, your skin is perfect. PLease tell me you pshopped the pics just a teeny bit. Disney didn't give me unrealistic expectations when it comes to romantic relationships. John Hughes' movies did.

I have never been to Disneyland, but I really want to go to Disneysea in Japan - you can drink alcohol there, get pissed, and then go on all the rides and you can thereby actually relive your childhood by getting scared on quite small rollercoasters and peeing in your pants.
You can get drunk at Epcot Center in Florida, every country sells their national beer or drink. A few years ago a group of us did the "Drinking Around the World" game and it was a total blast. You have to start in England so the last two countries you hit are Norway and Mexico, both have boat rides that are fucked up when sober but filled with Beer, Wine and Sake they are like bad acid trips.
Disney also has Pleasure Island down their, basically its a bunch of clubs filled with horny college aged chicks who work for the mouse. I 69ed with a chick that played Pocahontas while her friend who was Mary Poppins was passed out on the other bed, most of the dudes who work their are gay so the slutty girl to horny straight guy ratio is way in the guys favor.

What do you mean by this?
Because these kinds of stories set women up as defenseless victims who must be saved by the "perfect man". It suggests that one can actually be rescued from their less-than-perfect lives by perfect men. In reality, I believe that you must make your own life worth living on your own, before you get into a relationship with another of the opposite sex (who, suprise! won't be perfect, just human). I spent a lot of my drinking waiting for a guy to "rescue" me-- like when that man came into my life I would stop destroying it with alcohol and all would be well. I obviously had to learn the hard way that such a thing would never happen: nobody can save you. Only you can save yourself, which thank God, I did.
But I still hold men up to unrealistic expectations, and when they make some kind of human error, or do anything that annoys me, then I use that as an excuse to discard them and move on. I tend to idolize, and then when they disappoint, rip them to shreds (in my head). I think a lot of that stems from the fact that I idolized my father growing up-- and when I was old enough to realize he wasn't perfect and I could clearly see his flaws, I was crushed.
Not that this is really any of Disney's fault, but I think if I had been taught from an earlier age to not have such high expectations of others, I might not have this issue.

Next time you're at Disneyland give California Adventure (otherwise known as "Californialand") a try. The Robert Mondavi Winery has excellent wine that you can take anywhere in the park. And they have a 5-star restaurant that you can watch the Electical Parade from.
The rides are more carnival-like with a couple of top notch rollercoasters and a very cool attraction called The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. One of the best rides Disney has made in a while.

Ok, but before I go further and formulate my next reply I need to know what exactly is a "perfect man" to the womens and girls standards. If there is already a Disney is mentioned and prince then it has to be somekind of like a Disney prince. I bet that it is not the prince/beast guy from the Beauty and the Beast, but more something like a prince from Cinderella or the Sleeping Beauty.
List the criteria and features that would make a perfect man so I could formulate my next reply to this thread.

ruggedly handsome yet not seemingly preoccupied with his looks, self-deprecating, great sense of humor, appears to have a dirty mind based on the seventy-three double entendres per episode, comes off as an anti-snob (very important to me), i could go on all night.

"unrealistic romantic expectations" due to Disney Tales and John Hughes Flicks? Ok, well Holly kinda explained the "rescue me/prince charming" influence, but Holly, this would be what, when you were a little girl? What happened in your teens? That is when much of your perceptions and values and expectations should have been shaped, hopefully through a healthy High School dating history and not at the hands of a sneaky Uncle, or at the hands of the Football team running a train on your ass and mouth every Saturday Night after a Keg or 3. Gia, was it Andrew McCarthy In Pretty in Pink, or Jake in Sixteen Candles, or Ferris Burglar running his ass all over Chicago? I so wanted to splooge in Mia -Sloan Peterson-Sara even before I ever saw a open mouthed cumshot in a porn flick. Your first problem ladies is that you even HAVE romantic expectations. You just said it yourself, no one is perfect. Now dont just say that, BELIEVE it and accept it...you are old enough now, you have to accept it. People are messy....guys are messy, and sometimes they even smell too. Somedays he wont notice your hair looks nice or your new dress, somedays he will fart under the covers or his CUM will taste Horrible, and some days he will scowl at what you choose to wear out to dinner and dancing. Fuck all the expectations and simply take each man one at a time, and then AFTER you get an impression of what he is like for real and not through your impossible looking glass, weigh the plusses and minusses of what YOU want and what he can deliver to see what it balances out at.... I was lucky (*tongue in cheek*). Growing up my first 18 years, 1/3 were spent in the hospital. My first makeout session was in Shriner's Hospital with a girl with Scoliosis from Cyprus...Greek Chicks rule. My "expectations" were shaped entirely (almost) by nurses. Nurses Nurses Nurses. When I was in High School, i was a little bit Ferris Burglar only because I easily associated, and was friends with ALL clicques and groups. The sports teams liked the fact I knew a lot of pre-nursing students from the technical schools in Hartford and Springfield who worked as Candy Stripers I met while in the hospital. And of course, I learned early on I could get chicks, even the hot ones, to do shit for me if I employed "tit for tat"....I remember asking myself at age 13 "Just what is TAT, and how can I go about trading it in...?" I'd do homework for the hot bimbos with huge tits who always knew to loosen their blouses a little more when sitting next to me as I explained/intentionally bamboozled: "If X = 9 and y = 7, what is the square root of a Triangle?" "ummmm, Pi?" "noooo, come closer and let me explain it another way..." I'd buy the sluts their Cigs because no one ever carded me and they'd sit on my lap, light up, and grind their butt into my crotch while rocking back and forth on my knee in their crotch. I was never around long enough between hospitalizations to have a relationship with any of them, but one time, a few weeks before the prom, one special 17 yr old slut-with-a-heart-of-gold snuck into the hospital after visiting hours and brought me a Pizza and stayed with me until 2 am, giving me two handjobs despite my legs being in plaster casts, as we made out and watched Radio 1990 all night. Of course, i did write her paper on Wuthering Heights for her and got her a "B+" when she only needed a C. One goood thing about Hospital Sex is there is always some really good lube within arms reach.... Bottom line, I find life to be much simpler and less full of headaches and heartache by clearly delineating with my female friends and whorefriends between sex and friendship. As soon as my penis is involved and their is NOT a corresponding dollar amount or other form of exchange associated with penis' said involvement, thats when bullshit starts and people get confused and upset...and as a result, I find I am a better friend, confidant and burglar to all my female friends, whores or not.

Jesus Keeerist, gimme a break. You two need to STOP WATCHING SEX AND THE CITY, go out together, pick up some random dudes that aren't total freaks and just get fucked silly, and then come back to earth and find some realistic measures of happiness with a flawed yet decent man who will pay your bills, validate your beauty even when you are not with cum on your face everyday instead of just telling you "you're beautiful" (actions speak louder and MORE sincerely than words), and fix the toilet when it is fucked up. The clock is fuckin' ticking....
"Who would believe you was a beauty indeed When the days get shorter and the nights get long Lie awake when the Rain comes Nobody will know When you're old, when you're old Nobody will know That you was a beauty, a sweet sweet beauty A sweet sweet beauty but stone stone cold."
