BEWARE MAYWOOD, Ill., July 22 (UPI) -- A U.S. doctor warns iced tea contains high amounts of oxalate which can lead to kidney stones. Dr. John Milner of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, in Maywood, Ill., advises patients trying to ward off painful kidney stones to not reach for the iced tea. "For many people, iced tea is potentially one of the worst things they can drink," Milner says in a statement. "For people who have a tendency to form kidney stones, it's definitely one of the worst things you can drink." Kidney stones are crystals that form in the kidneys or ureters, the small tubes that drain the urine from the kidney to the bladder, Milner explains. The most common cause of kidney stones is the failure to drink enough fluids. Dehydration combined with increased iced tea consumption raises the risk of kidney stones in people prone to develop them. "People are told that in the summertime they should drink more fluids," Milner says. "A lot of people choose to drink more iced tea, thinking it's a tastier alternative. However, in terms of kidney stones, they're getting it going and coming. They're actually doing themselves a disservice." To remain hydrated there is no better alternative than water, Milner said.

Now you tell me. I drink a lot of iced tea and was in the hospital for three days in May with a kidney stone that turned into a nasty kidney infection.

The reason they mention Iced Tea is because people drink larger quantities of Iced Tea than they do hot. The real concern is sun-brewed Iced Tea as it steeps for a much longer time than any other type of tea. Green Tea seems to be okay.

Decent question but here are the facts: Kidney stones are SOOOO painful that most people can take LARGER than normal amounts of painkillers and not OD when having a stone, because the pain both keeps you clear headed AND the pain MAKES you breathe.
PLUS, with a stone, you almost always piss blood like Thomas Hearns hit you in the Kidney.

I wonder if a little allopurinol and cherry juice will fix the problem. Have a friend who had to stop taking dairy products due to the stones.

This story is great because... I was in Haiti (finally) and the gf and I were on a tour bus. This guy got on and said "Can everyone please give me a minute of your attention please? I have a very important thing to say."
This guy began a health rant which I ignored. After about an hour I noticed my girlfriend and some other people had their hands up. I then noticed she was getting some money out of her purse. I asked her what the hell she was doing and she said "I'm getting those pills!"
This guy had managed to talk the entire tour bus into purchasing 2 pills that supposedly clean your kidney after 3 months for $100. I asked her what the hell was wrong with her and why she didn't catch the con and she said "I didn't even think about that. All I could think of was how much I needed those pills."
