Über-Hack.
I'm pretty familiar with the town he grew up in. How he ever crawled out of there I'll never figure out.

I HATE THIS ASS. HACK.
Even worse, ALL of my friends think he's hilarious. I need new friends.
(I will admit the kissing scene in Chasing Amy in the car got my girl bits all warm, but I chalk that up to basic female insanity.)

NOT the voice of a generation, but he has his moments..like you didn't laugh when Randal dogs on the two LOTR nerds in the Mooby's all the while touting "Return of the Jedi". That was fucking totally funny!

I wouldn't call him a hack... but I certainly wouldn't say he is the voice of any generation. Maybe the voice of a sect of hardcore comic and sci-fi fanboys.
He is either hit or miss with his films. For example, I thought Clerks 2 was very funny... but Jersey Girl really sucked. Chasing Amy had nice moments... but I didn't care for the film. I'd say the guy is talented...but I wouldn't say he is great. I certainly wouldn't say he is a hack, though.
This pretty much embodies my opinions on the man and his films. The funniest things he's done have been the Evening With Kevin Smith videos. Evidence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgYhLIThTvk

Ah com'on Charlie. I'm from suburbia Camden (Cambodia), and Jersey is a shithole these days.
20 years ago, different story.
Jersey excretes, the world eats. Those of us displaced natives don't call it The Garbage State for no reason at all, although my brother & sister-in-law are looking for a place in Linden this next year.

Huh? Regardless of what one thinks about Jersey, the mag is about the fucked up places there. I'm not defending the state. I'm saying he stole someone's idea. I never trusted comic book geeks anyway. Talk to Smith about eating Jersey shit. He's made a career of it. It shows in his waistline. Very interesting zine: http://weirdnj.com/

He's far from the voice of a generation, but he's also not a hack. I'd recommend watching an evening with Kevin Smith if you want a stellar example of just how funny he can be.

aye, by far not the voice of a generation, but he as made some decent films, as well as some equally bad ones. Clerks, and Chasing AMy will always stand out as his best to me... while J&SBSB and Jersey Girl obviously scrape the very bottom of that list.
But there are far better, far more relevant, and far more talented directors out there.

All righty then, I am taking you out of my will and instead of getting one of my prized wheelchairs (the one in which I played the year I won The Northern Connecticut Wheelchair Basketball League's "Sixth Wheel Of The year" award for 1990), I am giving you my collection of Bedpans and rectal thermometers from the dark ages of Medicine back in the Early 70s when little baby Burglar first had to go in the hospital. You can sell them on e-bay though, should fetch 25 bucks, or an Alex Rodriguez Rookie card in trade value. We used to be tight bro....
nigga if you was really a friend you would not be giving your boy a 18+ year old wheelie for your death will. Why a nigga cant get a new computerized do everything wheelie not some 80's design , sport, make a nigga sweat wheelie.

Gotta admit, he can really tell a story. But that doesn't justify the fucking hype surrounding his mediocre films.

^^ Same can be said (with a little paraphrasing) about most celebrities and their fan bases. There's no accounting for individual tastes.
I mean, what does it really say about us, as a society, that we give so much attention and financial reward to such hollow figures as actors and professional athletes while barely acknowledging teachers, scientists, medical researchers, and public protectors like Fire and Police.
OR causes like world hunger and world peace, or clean energy and social welfare (health and transportation infrastructures, etc., not necessarily "welfare handouts")
I understand the physical and psychological need (and necessity) of entertainment and friendly competition for the general well-being of the masses, but priorities are terribly skewed.
In what Just World, does someone like Keanu Reeves realize 2.5 Billion (Fucking yes, I said BILLION) dollars for a three movie run, while there are people like Darrah around who suffer from the collapse of our educational system?

^^ I'll see if I can find it. It was a few years ago I saw the article but I don't remember where. I remember it being a combination of back-end percentages from the movies and a large chunk of all associated merchandising and toys.
The movies themselves netted him $250,000,000 [1/4 billion] 22.5 Mil per + %

I admit I'm as big of a nerd as there comes. If there's an earthquake there's an equal chance of me dying by being impaled by an X-Wing Fighter or a four foot version of Godzilla's nemesis, Rodan. That being said Kevin Smith is really unfunny. I think most of those jokes are just too heavily focused at a really select group of fan boys and the whole "hey, only you me and us nerds get the joke" ruins most of his movies for me. And most of the nerd gags have run real old. I've never bothered reading any of his comics, and the Jay and Silent Bob characters have grown so old because he milked every last fucking cent out of them. That being said, that "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" sounds REALLY bad and will be another footnote in his career. I guarantee our movie will be over 50% funnier, but then again thats not saying a lot based on its expected unfunniness.

Clerks and Chasing Amy were quite good. The others seem to fade into some gray morass of mediocrity.
Re Weird NJ, I used to subscribe to the mag in its early days. It was a neat read. It sure took off. I think the pair have a Weird US show on the History Channel. Hope it's as good as the early Weird NJ.
