An example of Smith as hack: his lame WEIRD NJ rip-off segments on the Tonight Show. He did short documentaries about weird places in America, which involved a lame intro in which Leno giggled like a schoolgirl while Smith spun around nervously on one foot, looking guilty.

This would have been mere hackwork for any other comedian or director. For Smith it was unforgivable because he's such a "Jersey guy" (registered trademark.)

For those who don't already know, WEIRD NJ is a zine about weird things and spots in NJ that has blossomed into a little DIY empire. Smith, like several others, ripped the two founding editors off BIG TIME.
