Worse then what. Bush? :bananaspewingmilkthrunose:

It's easy to make judgment calls backed by almost two decades of hindsight. Bush's bad decisions can be seen in real-time.
Do you really want to compound that by electing the Manchurian Candidate, insane McCain?

You have to agree the country and it's policies are fucked up right now. Any sane person would understand that the course we're on is NOT working.

Why in the world would you keep hitting yourself in the head with a hammer once it finally dawned on you where the pain was coming from?

I don't disagree. Just saying Carter was worse....because he was.

The late 70s sucked way worse than things do today, hence,Carter was worse.

Unless,of course,you're an Iraqi.

In 1974, many said we could not have a worse POTUS than Nixon and that Ford was just a continuation of Nixon. By 1979, many of them had realized that Nixon was not the worse POTUS in history. I depise Bush for many reasons and because of him I left the GOP. But Barack Fucking Obama. Are you kidding me?

What the fuck is with the a vote for McCain is a vote for Bush crap. If they were that much alike McCain would have got the VP nomination instead of Cheney. IIRC in 2000 McCain was the choice for Republicans who didn't like Bush. If a vote for McCain was a vote for Bush these people wouldn't have voted for him. This is like saying a vote for Obama is a vote for Kerry or Gore. Maybe McCain would be an asshole but he would not be the same asshole as Bush. He'd be a completely different asshole.

Yeah, let's dial back to the 2000 campaign when the animosity between McCain and Bush was so thick you could've cut it with a knife. I just think Obama is one of the phoniest politicians of all time.

yes, but the McCain of 2008 has decided position himself far up the christian right's ass, among other "changes" from the McCain of 2000.

With the increased likelihood that a few supreme court judges will need to be appointed soon... having a president who is looking to appease the censor, ban and pray crowd is about the most unappealing thing I can think of.

now a president who scares the SHIT out of them and whom they think is the antichrist... thats the biggest endorsement i can think of!

I don't see this at all. The jebus freaks still loathe McCain and the extent to which he's drifted right to mollify them is eclipsed by the extent to which Obama has moved to the center to appease the 'bitter" folks he alienated during the primary.

I've said repeatedly that I don't like either of these assholes, but, with some people, if you dare say one word against their sacred cow, you're forever branded "the enemy."

In any event, when a columnist as liberal as Richard Cohen says that McCain has achieved far more in his career than Obama, to the extent that he's hard put to name even one Obama achievement, that says a lot.

I'm not an obamashipper by any means... but lets look at some of mccains achievements in his life... bottom of his class in the air force, crashed 5 planes including the time he got caught, was happy to talk for better treatment while in the hanoi hilton.... yep... real american hero right there. Though unlike some presidents at least he showed up for his duty (i'm looking at you bill and george).

i will say though... if Obama shifts more toward the fiscal conservative side... and stays socially liberal i will like him much more. He is already almost there.

However.... lets face it... they all are the same and serve the same masters, eh?

Speaking of seeing things coming...

"The inertia and acquiescence which allows the suspension of our liberties would once have been unthinkable. The present ignorance and indifference is appalling. The little that is worthwhile in our civilization and culture is made possible by the few who are capable of creative thinking and independent action, grudgingly assisted by the rest. When the majority of men surrender their freedom, barbarism is near but when the creative minority surrender it, the Dark Age has arrived. Even the word liberalism has now become a front for a new social form of Christian morality. Science, that was going to save the world back in H.G. Wells' time, is regimented, strait-jacketed and scared; its universal language is diminished to one word, security.

In this 1950 view some of my more hopeful utterances may appear almost naive. However, I was never so naive as to believe that freedom in any full sense of the word is possible for more than a few. But I have believed and do still hold that these few, by self-sacrifice, wisdom, courage and continuous effort, can achieve and maintain a free world. The labor is heroic but it can be done by example and by education. Such was the faith that built America, a faith that America has surrendered. I call upon America to renew this faith before she perishes.

We are one nation but we are also one world. The soul of the slums looks out of the eyes of Wall Street and the fate of a Chinese coolie determines the destiny of America. We cannot suppress our brother's liberty without suppressing our own and we cannot murder our brothers without murdering ourselves. We stand together as men for human freedom and human dignity or we will fall together, as animals, back into the jungle.

In this very late hour it is with solutions that we must be primarily concerned. We seem to be living in a nation that simply does not know what we are told we have and that we tell each other we have. Indeed, it is far more than that. It is to the definition of freedom, to its understanding, in order that it may be attained and defended, that this essay is devoted. I need not add that freedom is dangerous -- but it is hardly possible that we are all cowards."
- JPL founder Jack Whiteside Parsons in the preface to Freedom is a Two Edged Sword.

Personally i believe our system has failed and is corrupt to its very core at this point. Time to start over.

McCain graduated from the Naval Academy. He was not in the Air Force. His experiences in the Hanoi Hilton included brutality that most of us can't comprehend, much less survive. He did not talk to receive better treatment and there is absolutely no evidence that he ever received preferential treatment. Not one of his fellow prisoners has ever indicated that McCain received better treatment than the rest. He did not crash 5 airplanes prior to being shot down. He would have been permanently removed from flight status long before he had a chance to crash a fifth plane.

However, there IS considerable evidence that Hanoi offered him special treatment several times, including early repatriation, in an effort to embarrass his father, who was the top Navy commander in the pacific at that time. To his eternal credit, McCain refused said offers enough times that it earned him multiple beatings and a 2-year stretch in solitary.

There's a difference between appeasing the religious right and talking out of your ass just to get their vote. McCain and his strategists know if the religious right stays home on Election Day it will be hard for him to beat Obama. I'm betting however if you look closely he has his fingers crossed when making his pledges for them null and void in actuality. Or do you really believe presidential candidates follow up on campaign promises?

Navy pilot John Sidney McCain III should have never been allowed to graduate from the U.S. Navy flight school. He was a below average student and a lousy pilot. Had his father and grandfather not been famous four star U.S. Navy admirals, McCain III would have never been allowed in the cockpit of a military aircraft.

His father John S. "Junior" McCain was commander of U.S. forces in Europe later becoming commander of American forces in Vietnam while McCain III was being held prisoner of war. McCain III's grandfather John S. McCain, Sr. commanded naval aviation at the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.

During his relative short stunt on flight status, McCain III lost five U.S. Navy aircraft, four in accidents and one in combat.

Robert Timberg, author of The Nightingale's Song, a book about Annapolis graduates and their tours in Vietnam, wrote that McCain "learned to fly at Pensacola, though his performance was below par, at best good enough to get by. He liked flying, but didn't love it."

McCain III lost jet number one in 1958 when he plunged into Corpus Christi Bay while practicing landings. He was knocked unconscious by the impact coming to as the plane settled to the bottom.

McCain's second crash occurred while he was deployed in the Mediterranean. "Flying too low over the Iberian Peninsula," Timberg wrote, "he took out some power lines [reminiscent of the 1998 incident in which a Marine Corps jet sliced through the cables of a gondola at an Italian ski resort, killing 20] which led to a spate of newspaper stories in which he was predictably identified as the son of an admiral."

McCain's third crash three occurred when he was returning from flying a Navy trainer solo to Philadelphia for an Army-Navy football game.

Timberg reported that McCain radioed, "I've got a flameout" and went through standard relight procedures three times before ejecting at one thousand feet. McCain landed on a deserted beach moments before the plane slammed into a clump of trees.

McCain's fourth aircraft loss occurred July 29, 1967, soon after he was assigned to the USS Forrestal as an A-4 Skyhawk pilot. While seated in the cockpit of his aircraft waiting his turn for takeoff, an accidently fired rocket slammed into McCain's plane. He escaped from the burning aircraft, but the explosions that followed killed 134 sailors, destroyed at least 20 aircraft, and threatened to sink the ship.

McCain's fifth loss happened during his 23rd mission over North Vietnam on Oct. 26, 1967, when McCain's A-4 Skyhawk was shot down by a surface-to-air missile. McCain ejected from the plane breaking both arms and a leg in the process and subsequently parachuted into Truc Bach Lake near Hanoi.

After being drug from the lake, a mob gathered around McCain, spit on him, kicked him and stripped him of his clothing. He was bayoneted in his left foot and his shoulder crushed by a rifle butt. He was then transported to the Hoa Lo Prison, also known as the Hanoi Hilton.

After being periodically slapped around for "three or four days" by his captors who wanted military information, McCain called for an officer on his fourth day of captivity. He told the officer, "O.K., I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital." -U.S. News and World Report, May 14, 1973 article written by former POW John McCain.

"Demands for military information were accompanied by threats to terminate my medical treatment if I [McCain] did not cooperate. Eventually, I gave them my ship's name and squadron number, and confirmed that my target had been the power plant." Page 193-194, Faith of My Fathers by John McCain.

When the communist learned that McCain's father was Admiral John S. McCain, Jr., the soon-to-be commander of all U.S. Forces in the Pacific, he was rushed to Gai Lam military hospital (U.S. government documents), a medical facility normally unavailable for U.S. POWs.

The communist Vietnamese figured, because POW McCain's father was of such high military rank, that he was of royalty or the governing circle. Thereafter the communist bragged that they had captured "the crown prince."

For 23 combat missions (an estimated 20 hours over enemy territory), the U.S. Navy awarded McCain a Silver Star, a Legion of Merit for Valor, a Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, two Commendation medals plus two Purple Hearts and a dozen service medals.

"McCain had roughly 20 hours in combat," explains Bill Bell, a veteran of Vietnam and former chief of the U.S. Office for POW/MIA Affairs -- the first official U.S. representative in Vietnam since the 1973 fall of Saigon. "Since McCain got 28 medals," Bell continues, "that equals out to about a medal-and-a-half for each hour he spent in combat. There were infantry guys -- grunts on the ground -- who had more than 7,000 hours in combat and I can tell you that there were times and situations where I'm sure a prison cell would have looked pretty good to them by comparison. The question really is how many guys got that number of medals for not being shot down."

For years, McCain has been an unchecked master at manipulating an overly friendly and biased news media. The former POW turned Congressman, turned U.S. Senator, has managed to gloss over his failures as a pilot and collaborations with the enemy by exaggerating his military service and lying about his feats of heroism.

McCain has sprouted a halo and wings to become America's POW-hero presidential candidate.

Or your 43rd, for that matter.

I'm no fan of McCain by any stretch of the imagination. But an Obama presidency would be a disaster for the country and an even bigger one for the long-term prospects for the Democratic party.

Remember the backlash after four years of Carter? That's nothing compared to what will happen if little boy gets in.

Sorry, my mistake. The pink bikini shut my brain down for a few moments.
I thought Natalie Bush was Jeb's Daughter, Dubya's niece, but no.

I guess it was just wishful thinking on my part the Georgie boy had done SOMETHING, however remote, that I would admire. (I know, grasping at straws.)

I have no idea who she is but she certainly is pleasant to look at. Please forgive my faux pas.

Iraq/Pakistan border? Have you been drinking, Gunker?

Yes, I've have been drinking, but this is a reference to a McCain gaffe on "Good Morning America."

"Asked on ABC's "Good Morning America" about the situation in Afghanistan -- where both presidential candidates call for sending more US troops to take on the resurgent Taliban and root out al Qaeda, McCain replied.

"I think it's serious. . . . It's a serious situation, but there's a lot of things we need to do. We have a lot of work to do and I'm afraid it's a very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq/Pakistan border.""

I'll read it again after I've had a few

Allies Ask Obama to Make ‘Hope’ More Specific

As Senator Barack Obama prepares to accept the Democratic presidential nomination next week, party leaders in battleground states say the fight ahead against Senator John McCain looks tougher than they imagined, with Mr. Obama vulnerable on multiple fronts despite weeks of cross-country and overseas campaigning.

These Democrats — 15 governors, members of Congress and state party leaders — say Mr. Obama has yet to convert his popularity among many Americans into solutions to crucial electoral challenges: showing ownership of an issue, like economic stewardship or national security; winning over supporters of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton; and minimizing his race and experience level as concerns for voters.

Mr. Obama has run for the last 18 months as the candidate of hope. Yet party leaders — while enthusiastic about Mr. Obama and his state-by-state campaign operations — say he must do more to convince the many undecided Democrats and independents that he would address their financial anxieties rather than run, by and large, as an agent of change — given that change, they note, is not an issue.

“I particularly hope he strengthens his economic message — even Senator Obama can speak more clearly and specifically about the kitchen-table, bread-and-butter issues like high energy costs,” said Gov. Ted Strickland of Ohio. “It’s fine to tell people about hope and change, but you have to have plenty of concrete, pragmatic ideas that bring hope and change to life.”

Or, in the blunter words of Gov. Phil Bredesen, Democrat of Tennessee: “Instead of giving big speeches at big stadiums, he needs to give straight-up 10-word answers to people at Wal-Mart about how he would improve their lives.”

I'm not a Republican.

Neither are the fifteen Democratic governors, members of Congress and state party leaders asking Obama to , ummm... elaborate upon his platitudes.

If Democrats are telling him this, maybe there's something to it.

I agree. Why does the republican party always get such a favourable treatment by the media compared to the democrats??

Fucking idiot messiah cultist. CHANGE! People like you are what is ruining the concept of democracy, making it degenerate into the giant mother-in-law it is turning into.

How John McCain is Going to Win...

By letting Obama be Obama.

McCain takes 5-point lead over Obama

WASHINGTON - In a sharp turnaround, Republican John McCain has opened a 5-point lead on Democrat Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race and is seen as a stronger manager of the economy, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.

McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama's solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.

The reversal follows a month of attacks by McCain, who has questioned Obama's experience, criticized his opposition to most new offshore oil drilling and mocked his overseas trip.

The poll was taken Thursday through Saturday as Obama wrapped up a weeklong vacation in Hawaii that ceded the political spotlight to McCain, who seized on Russia's invasion of Georgia to emphasize his foreign policy views.

"There is no doubt the campaign to discredit Obama is paying off for McCain right now," pollster John Zogby said. "This is a significant ebb for Obama."

McCain now has a 9-point edge, 49 percent to 40 percent, over Obama on the critical question of who would be the best manager of the economy -- an issue nearly half of voters said was their top concern in the November 4 presidential election...

McCain has been on the offensive against Obama during the last month over energy concerns, with polls showing strong majorities supporting his call for an expansion of offshore oil drilling as gasoline prices hover near $4 a gallon.

Obama had opposed new offshore drilling, but said recently he would support a limited expansion as part of a comprehensive energy program.

That was one of several recent policy shifts for Obama, as he positions himself for the general election battle. But Zogby said the changes could be taking a toll on Obama's support, particularly among Democrats and self-described liberals.

"That hairline difference between nuance and what appears to be flip-flopping is hurting him with liberal voters," Zogby said.

Obama's support among Democrats fell 9 percentage points this month to 74 percent, while McCain has the backing of 81 percent of Republicans. Support for Obama, an Illinois senator, fell 12 percentage points among liberals, with 10 percent of liberals still undecided compared to 9 percent of conservatives.

Obama needs to work on base

"Conservatives were supposed to be the bigger problem for McCain," Zogby said. "Obama still has work to do on his base. At this point McCain seems to be doing a better job with his."

The dip in support for Obama, who would be the first black U.S. president, cut across demographic and ideological lines. He slipped among Catholics, born-again Christians, women, independents and younger voters. He retained the support of more than 90 percent of black voters.

"There were no wild swings, there isn't one group that is radically different than last month or even two months ago. It was just a steady decline for Obama across the board," Zogby said.

Obama's support among voters between the ages of 18 and 29, which had been one of his strengths, slipped 12 percentage points to 52 percent. McCain, who will turn 72 next week, was winning 40 percent of younger voters.

"Those are not the numbers Obama needs to win," Zogby said about Americans under 30. The 47-year-old is counting on a strong turnout among young voters, a key bloc of support during his primary battle with New York Sen. Hillary Clinton.

It made little difference when independent candidate Ralph Nader and Libertarian Party candidate Bob Barr, who are both trying to add their names to state ballots.

McCain still held a 5-point edge over Obama, 44 percent to 39 percent, when all four names were included. Barr earned 3 percent and Nader 2 percent.
