re reading all of it again, your right papercut... we cannot directly attribute #4 to McCain, but we can assert from the whole collection that he is a cyborg sent from the future to start Judgment Day.
(they just replaced the "flying planes" program with the "senior moments" and "loose lips" programs...)
I'm calling John Conner

How John McCain is Going to Win...
By letting Obama be Obama.
McCain takes 5-point lead over Obama
WASHINGTON - In a sharp turnaround, Republican John McCain has opened a 5-point lead on Democrat Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race and is seen as a stronger manager of the economy, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.
McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama's solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.
The reversal follows a month of attacks by McCain, who has questioned Obama's experience, criticized his opposition to most new offshore oil drilling and mocked his overseas trip.
The poll was taken Thursday through Saturday as Obama wrapped up a weeklong vacation in Hawaii that ceded the political spotlight to McCain, who seized on Russia's invasion of Georgia to emphasize his foreign policy views.
"There is no doubt the campaign to discredit Obama is paying off for McCain right now," pollster John Zogby said. "This is a significant ebb for Obama." McCain now has a 9-point edge, 49 percent to 40 percent, over Obama on the critical question of who would be the best manager of the economy -- an issue nearly half of voters said was their top concern in the November 4 presidential election...
McCain has been on the offensive against Obama during the last month over energy concerns, with polls showing strong majorities supporting his call for an expansion of offshore oil drilling as gasoline prices hover near $4 a gallon.
Obama had opposed new offshore drilling, but said recently he would support a limited expansion as part of a comprehensive energy program.
That was one of several recent policy shifts for Obama, as he positions himself for the general election battle. But Zogby said the changes could be taking a toll on Obama's support, particularly among Democrats and self-described liberals.
"That hairline difference between nuance and what appears to be flip-flopping is hurting him with liberal voters," Zogby said.
Obama's support among Democrats fell 9 percentage points this month to 74 percent, while McCain has the backing of 81 percent of Republicans. Support for Obama, an Illinois senator, fell 12 percentage points among liberals, with 10 percent of liberals still undecided compared to 9 percent of conservatives.
Obama needs to work on base
"Conservatives were supposed to be the bigger problem for McCain," Zogby said. "Obama still has work to do on his base. At this point McCain seems to be doing a better job with his."
The dip in support for Obama, who would be the first black U.S. president, cut across demographic and ideological lines. He slipped among Catholics, born-again Christians, women, independents and younger voters. He retained the support of more than 90 percent of black voters.
"There were no wild swings, there isn't one group that is radically different than last month or even two months ago. It was just a steady decline for Obama across the board," Zogby said.
Obama's support among voters between the ages of 18 and 29, which had been one of his strengths, slipped 12 percentage points to 52 percent. McCain, who will turn 72 next week, was winning 40 percent of younger voters.
"Those are not the numbers Obama needs to win," Zogby said about Americans under 30. The 47-year-old is counting on a strong turnout among young voters, a key bloc of support during his primary battle with New York Sen. Hillary Clinton.
It made little difference when independent candidate Ralph Nader and Libertarian Party candidate Bob Barr, who are both trying to add their names to state ballots.
McCain still held a 5-point edge over Obama, 44 percent to 39 percent, when all four names were included. Barr earned 3 percent and Nader 2 percent.
I'm willing to bet that if the tables were turned MSNBC would have used the words criticisms and campaigned instead of attacks and on the offensive. Also can anyone here explain to me why the part I put in bold type needed to be mentioned in this story. It is not in one bit germane to the topic and would not change the context of the story in anyway if it was omitted. Except that it plants a subtle unspoken accusation of racism at the voters that have backed off of Obama.

it's mentioned a lot because it's a big, important deal that people believe that a black guy has a legit shot to actually win the presidency. it would be hugely historic if he won. (he won't, though, so don't lose sleep about what might happen) acknowledging that has nothing to do with accusing you of being racist.
y'all are some eagle-eye motherfuckers when it comes to finding and exposing examples of the media's bias against rich white men, but it's weird to me how you seem to have no problem swallowing whole the image of black folks you are fed.

If the story was titled "Black Man Has Chance to Make History" or "Black Man Could Become President" then pointing out that Obama is black would be relevant. But this story is about McCain closing ground on Obama. Unless they are inferring that McCain closed the gap because Obama is black his race is irrelevant. Would it have made any sense to say "McCain, who would be the 43rd white man to become president, ...." in the article?

FWIW, if Obama performs no other service to his country, he's made it a lot easier for a responsible black Democrat to run in the future. But equating dislike of Obama with racism per se is as intellectually lazy and as knee-jerk a reaction as eblab equating it with being a Republican.

i'd say no, because like every president ever has been a white male, so it isn't notable in the least. it's the default setting. mentioning it isn't giving obama a special advantage, i don't believe, but we seem to disagree on that.
there seems to be the sentiment on this board that if black folks think something is unfair they should just shut their trap, suck it up and deal with it, because that's what white people do when the going gets tough. where exactly does that viewpoint disappear to when you believe white people are treated unfairly?

Hell, I was saying that in my department Friday morning, and my co-workers said "wuh?"
He's an attack dog (ala Bush's Cheney in 2000) and quite learned in foreign affairs.
However, he runs his mouth off before he thinks, and will provide more distracting "talking points" for the corporate media to harp on as distractions from the core issues (i.e. Republican Party as the Wrecking Crew*)

it was mostly down to Biden or C. Edwards. Edwards sadly for him was knocked out of the running in the end due in part to the actions of another Edwards and the Obama campaign not wanting voters to confuse the two at the polls. Biden of course also got the advantage among senior campaign staff because of his age, foreign affairs experience and because he provides a great counterpoint to McCain.

I've flip-flopped. I said earlier that McCain would win... I now think Obama will lose. I can't believe what a pompous, self-absorbed ass Obama is. 1) He's campaigned for 'change' since day one, then he picks a VP that's been in office since most of us were in diapers. Sounds pretty status-qou to me and everyone else. 2) He fucks over Hillary (not that I support her) who holds the keys to 18 million votes. 5.4 million wouldn't commit to supporting Obama until he made his VP choice (Hillary) and 3.6 million already say they will vote McCain. If NObama really wanted to be sitting in the Oval Office come November, he would have picked Hillary and won by a landslide. What I'd really like to see is McCain go across party lines and pick Hillary as VP - just to make things more interesting since both candidates are BORING! Democrats would cry foul, Republicans would just plain cry.

If Obama picked Hillary as his Veep the chances that Dion would be adding a verse to "Abraham, Martin & John" in September 2010, would sit at about 85%.

Good. If I was in Obama's shoes and had Hillary as a VP I would be giving all my speeches and press conferences on a trampoline. I would have figured as slick as the Clintons are they could come up with a way to make sure someone in the S.S. had to scratch their nose at just the right time.

So we only have months to get to know him and dig up dirt on him.
Duh.
What do you mean DUH? Why do we have to watch McCain and Obama for fucking months upon months prior to elections and not the vice? Makes no sense to me.

No one goes into the election cycle with the goal of running for vice-president. They either want the whole enchilada or none of it. You have to wait until after some of the crap has been filtered out of the election water when some of the candidates realize that their only chance is to get a VP nomination then hope for a landing gear malfunction on Air Force One.

I think McCain has already signed his defeat by selecting her; does America really want a possible president when McCain's one blocked blood vessel away from a stroke who has the same drawl as the chick from "Frago?" What a totally baffling choice; I think he would have had a helluva lot better chance choosing that milk face Mitt Romney at this point. Ali G on a woman president vs. Saddam Hussein: Quote:

On the contrary. She's a known reformer who took down her entrenched, corrupt predecessor (who was also a Republican.) She has executive experience as Mayor and Governor vs. Obama's experience as a part-time legislator. And her eldest son is scheduled to be deployed to Iraq in about two weeks. I don't see what you're getting at here.

Sorry... this was a mistake for McCain and I for one am grateful he made it. She will be killed by Biden in the Debate, as McCain will be eaten alive by Obama.
Not to mention these two in the whitehouse would be a civil rights nightmare. Bye bye freedom of speech, expression, press, etc... Bring on more corporatism, warmongering, and the evangelical theocracy. Praise jesus or you are a traitor and a terrorist..

Yep. Two years more experience than Obama the part-time legislator has.
And honestly, I don't see either McCain or Pallin being anywhere near as bad on Civil Liberties as Bush was. Certainly not in terms of obscenity prosecutions. That was Bush and his "evangelical theocrats."
Speaking of which, last I checked, the bible-thumpers loathed McCain. Don't know where you're getting your news from, but it must be a "blissful" place, indeed.

She was a good get. Strong chance of picking up some of Hillarys 18 million votes. What's not to love...
Married her high school sweetheart. Husband is a fisherman, works for BP and is a long time union member. Is also a champion snowmobiler. Has five kids. Eldest joined the Army on 9/11 last year and ships out to Iraq on 9/11 this year. Of the five kids, the youngest has Downs and she knew this and choose not to end the pregnancy. Was a Miss Alaska runner up and took the scholarship and went to college to get her Bachelors degree. Worked with her husband on the fishing boat and survived a wreck in the boat, broke all the fingers in her two hands. Was a City Council member (two terms, 92-96). Went on to become mayor where she reduced her salary AND reduced property taxes by 60%. Was on a state commission investigating fraud and cleaned house, regardless of party membership. Is now governor and has been cleaning house there also. AND, taking on big oil!
As to Obama's campaign committee complaints, she has more fiscal experience than he does AND has as much foreign government experience. She visited Germany also in an official capacity and she DID visit the troops and the troops in the hospitals.
While Obama spent most of the time on the bench in the championship game for his school, her free shot won the championship for her high school basketball team. She did it with a stress fracture.
If I didn't know better I'd think McCain had selected Bad Habit!

I still think McCain should have gone with Pawlenty and put five different states in the mid-west in strong contention. What's Palin's big claim to fame? She took down Ted fucking Steven's business partner/senate/governor friend? Picking someone as unknown as her is going to put the media on his trail and they're going to pick up on every bumbling trip McCain takes down a grocery aisle from here on out. McCain's touting his "bipartisanship" but that's not what his base wants to hear; it might be realistic given the Dem's control of Congress, but I think turn-out is going to be the big factor on election day. McCain is not going to get the bible thumpers out there, and even then the 1-2% of people who are going to go with Bob Barr or write in Ron Paul are going to further erode him. My prediction: Obama 53%, McCain 45%. Electoral win by 50-60 points. She also has a son with Down Syndrome...hasn't eight years with one retard in the White House been enough?

Besides, if Bush hasn't been able to shut down the industry by now, what makes you think McCain is going to. So far, the fundies won one with Max, lost BIG TIME with Jeff and have gone nowhere with your pal Rob Black. I don't see their record improving much. Sorry, Rob.

they're going to pick up on every bumbling trip McCain takes down a grocery aisle from here on out.
I'm pretty sure that the only people who paid attention to that clip are Gunker and elaborator. It doesn't resonate with the public like Ford falling down the stairs, or Bush the Elder not knowing how the checkout line worked.

So who exactly are the bible-thumpers going to vote for? Obama? Please Stevie. That would be their worst nightmare come true. And they're sure as hell not going to chance it by voting for Barr, or any other fringe candidate. They know what Nader cost Gore in 2000.
Fact is, the die hards on both sides would vote for their respective parties if Pol Pot and Franco were the candidates. This is going to come down to the undecideds, and, with them in mind, this is a smart move.

Right, because a four-month-old infant has so much influence on affairs of State.

once they get one win, they get a precedent. Thats what Robs original point was... that if he could win, then everyone could win.... but if he lost it would set up for the next in line and they slowly whittle down. And yes... they got nowhere with Rob... but they got what they wanted by milking him dry financially.
Are you really drinking the fear kool-aid? There is a middle ground between surrender and antagonism. We can open dialogues and when necessary adjust policies in order to cool the tides of conflict. We can work with the international community rather than be Israels bitch thug patrol. We are a joke in the international community right now...
Do you really think that right NOW we are safer from extremist muslims than we were on 9/11? We have done nothing since that day but stir up MORE hatred and breed more extremism... Now we are staring down the barrel of a new cold war... WHICH MCCAIN WILL AND IS PROUDLY STOKING THE FIRES OF! Who are you more afraid of... Iran having a couple SHORT RANGE, low power nukes that at most will hit Israel? or stirring up a war with a country that has a few THOUSAND ICBM's armed with extremely high power nuclear warheads.
Sorry, i fear AG Rudy G. (or any other choice) and whatever supreme court pick McCain will likely get during his term, way more than i fear Ahmadinijad. The terror in the distance is nothing but a distraction away from the terror in your own home.

You can make statements like this, support a would-be messiah, and run around like fringe porn's answer to Chicken Little... and still accuse others of drinking Kool-Aid?
No wonder you live in Florida.
