One of my friends is the same way. Doesn't bother me. What bothers me are people buying BLackberrys for their 10 year-olds. I needed something I could take with me when I travel that lightens my load. Carrying along my phone, iPod, laptop, etc. was getting bothersome. My iPhone takes the place of my old phone, my iPod, and does most of the things I used my laptop for (email, web-browsing). Now I can carry enough clothes with me that I don't have to worry about checking any luggage. Considering that the airlines have "misplaced" my luggage three of the last four times I've had to check my bags, I think avoiding it is a good thing.
