One can live many years with HIV if:

- One can afford the expensive anti-HIV drugs
- It is discovered early enough that said drugs can have an effect
- The virus doesn't develop an immunity to the drugs
- The HIV carrier can withstand the sometimes devastating side effects of the drugs.

Just because high profile names like Magic and Andrew Sullivan have lived comfortably with the virus for many years, doesn't mean everyone does or can.
