Christian, I'm a fan of your blog, and you seem like a genuinely nice guy. However, today you posted about buying a new car, and something about the math just doesn't make sense. According to your blog, you bought a new 2008 Honda CR-V as follows : $10,000 downpayment $5,000 trade-in value for existing vehicle 48 months loan financed at 9.24% $639/month actual payment Now, I punched those numbers into this auto loan calculator, and it comes back with a total loan value around $40,000. That amount would include any taxes and other fees; and you also say you had them pack in some rims and navigation options. I can't figure out how a vehicle that sells for $21,300 (note the sticker price in the window) ends up costing $40,000 !! Even worse, you stated that the dealer gave you $5000 for trade-in on your 2003 Honda CR-V with 120,000 miles. I went on AutoTrader.com, and did a search for that make, model and year of vehicle within 200 miles of zipcode 90210. There were five of them on there near or above that mileage, with selling prices ranging between $11,000 and $14,000. Kelley Blue Book value for a vehicle with the same specs ranges from $4890 to $6650 for trade-in value, or $7275 to $9060 for a private party sale. Joey Silvera isn't the only one running a Strap Attack -- looks like Carlos at Power Honda Valencia also likes to stick it in, twist it, and break it off. As a guy who's obviously computer savvy, knows how to use the web, and seems like he has a good head on his shoulders, this to me is more embarrasing for you than any of the trannylicious attacks people level at you about your early porn career. I can understand wanting a new ride, and sure it's exciting getting new toys and all, but unless I'm missing something, these guys took you to the cleaners. Sorry to be the one to harsh your buzz.

Did you account for the possibility that he applied the $5,000 trade-in into his $10,000 down payment?
Top of the line CR-V is circa $28-29K before tax. If you put the figures in as 5k down and 5k trade-in, you get 33k if you account for 8% tax.

Here's the sticker from the eBay car; reasonably equipped (but no navigation included) -- comes with AC, radio+CD, etc... the eBay car is in Georgia, but how different could the prices be?

Top of the line 4WD EX-L CR-V with Navigation is $28,400 before taxes according to the Honda website . Who knows what accessories Xian added on after that.

If my interest rate were that high, I would've put more down. The interest you have to pay on that for 3-4 years far exceeds the earnings of even a high yield cd (5% being generous) or any money you have in savings or money market acct. Just sayin.' Or correct me if I'm wrong here.

Give that most Tier 1 credit customers are at 6.65 for 48 month term, Christians 9.24% at 48 month term means he has really fucked up credit. He's like a Tier 3 (600-650 FICO).
I have a friend who bought a Toyota from Toyota Motor Credit and he got a 7% for 5 years and his Fico was 640.
Christian does like to get hosed in the ass without lube. Bankrate

i posted that my credit score was a tier 4 615 which is no good. second, i had the 10 grand from a CD that just matured so i didn't have to dig into my savings or IRA. third, i bought just about every extra they had door visors, navigation, chrome exhaust, rims, cool rearview mirror etc. so the total price of my car with taxes was 36k. subtract 5k for my tradein and you get 31k. I didn't want the long 72 month loan, so I took the 48 month loan at 540 a month. then i got the full warranty package with the anti-theft and lojack and that brought my monthly payment to 639 a month.
I realize that i am paying a lot in interest, but i am going to pay more than 639 a month because I can afford it. Also, again this is my first real purchase that can positively affect my credit, so I dont mind taking the long term financial hit.

Given the fact that you don't drive cars until they can no longer move, it would be more financially sound to lease a car instead of buy a car. Your capital outlay initially and monthly would be far less. With the $10K you put down , you could have put that money into a long term CD. The interest you would have made from the $10K would have covered some of the money factor you would have paid on the lease.
You could of even kept your old CRV and leased a new car with ZERO outlay and written off your lease payment 100% since you are an independent contractor. Your lease payment on a fully loaded CRV at $31K MSRP is about $579. You could have written off $20,844 over the life of the lease.
Plus a 10K 3 year CD at 4.12% would yield you $11,316.
That sure sounds a lot better than paying $45,672 for a car worth $31,000 in 4 years. And in 4 years that car would be worth about $5000. Your net payment is $40,672.
Maybe that's why you are a porn star.

I hear ya, cxxx, but I would've taken out money from my savings in addition to the money from the matured cd for the down payment to make my monthly lower. and, yes, paying a car loan on time every month will boost your rating hugely.

Now that more information has been made available, I will step forward and offer that this purchase doesn't look like as much of a clusterfuck as it did initially based on the blog description. I'm not as concerned with the credit scores and interest rate as other people are -- Christian laid that all on the table himself, so it is what it is. He agreed to it knowing it wasn't exactly a gift. Having said that, I really need to agree with CJ about the business write-off possibilities that were missed out on here. You have mentioned on your blog having switched to handling your accounting as a small business, etc. Did you know that banks sometimes offer small business loans at prime or below-prime interest rate? Yeah, even to one-man "consultants" like yourself. They don't care that it gets used for a car. There are obvious write-off advantages there alone, and the interest rate is obviously better, but also because it is not a standard auto loan, you can do tricks like yank the insurance if you were going to park the vehicle in longterm storage (that you usually can't do when someone else still owns the asset). I'd also like to point out that Christian could have also almost paid for the vehicle itself in CASH using the money from his CD and the money from selling his existing ride in a private sale. This would have almost covered the cost of a reasonably equipped vehicle like the eBay one I posted above. Yeah, taxes + fees would have been extra, and yeah you may not have gotten to choose the exact color, but at the end of the day it would have been (nearly) paid for upfront. The private sale thing really hurts -- especially since within a week, the dealer will likely have the car detailed and on the lot for $9975 (MINIMUM). The extra options Christian has described as adding on are mostly personal preference odds and ends, but nothing critical -- it's not like the old days where air conditioning was an "option". Lojack on a Honda is kinda comical, and Magellan has a nice nav unit with a big screen and internet updates for no more than $399 at Costco right now. All these options are a personal taste thing, so it's hard to knock someone for making their own decisions, but financially they can really hurt. I only ever brought this topic up because I have seen others around me make the same mistakes, or have made some of them myself, and just cringe when I see someone else get bit. Required reading for everyone should be Don't Get Taken Every Time by Remar Sutton.

What about MP3?
If you read the sticker on the eBay car above, it clearly (blurrily) states that the default stereo comes with "MP3 / Auxilliary Input Jack" -- it's the second line item found under "Interior Features" column on the window sticker. Maybe Christian had a different preference for his tunes, but outside of a performance system, an aux input is all you need for hooking in your favorite player.

Christian, since auto loan interest is not tax deductible, you can limit the amount you pay over time by paying more per month (assuming your loan doesn't have a prepayment penalty). Many years ago, I had a four year car loan and paid it off in about 16 months. I saved several thousand dollars in interest. When I buy my next car, it will be all cash or a company car paid for/leased by my company.
If you book extra scenes in a month, throw those earnings against the loan, not into savings. Unless you can guarantee a better than 9.24% AFTER tax return on your money (and even if you want to put it into retirement a better than 9.24% return is still needed) you will be ahead by retiring the loan early.
It is not a good idea to pay things off early when there is strong inflation like they had in the 1970s. Then you want to pay the minimum to repay the obligation with "cheaper" dollars over time. Another time not to pay things off early, if you have some form of interest rate arbitrage, i.e., below market financing, subsidized loans, etc. and you can get better return on your money in the open market than paying your debt obligation early.

Cxxx often brags that he shoots twice a day every day. At $600 a scene that's 1200 a day. 30 days = $36000. Let's say he works 5 days a week that's $24,000 a month. I guess he took accounting and financial planning with Ed McMahon and Evander Holyfield.

I am not in finance so I am not certain. Like in subprime mortgages where there are usually nasty penalties for refinancing (usually in the 5 figures --Hello Countrywide), who knows what kind of financial terms Christian got. He claims he has somewhat shitty credit and is using dealer financing, who knows what the caveats are. Today, I can get up to a five year auto loan from my credit union for 5.70% of up to 120% of MSRP compare that to the 9.24% he got.

Most states have prohibitions on prepayment penalties for consumer loans. And no adjustable rate loan has one, or your lender is a moron and a crook.

Like mortgages, finance guys at dealerships have the ability to mark up from their par rates to make money on the back end. Seeing that Cxxx had a low fico score, the dealership marked up the rate from their buy rate.
A smart always walks into a dealership with outside financing. NEVER get financing at the dealership even with a high FICO score. Get financing first at your credit union, local bank you bank with, or national banks. Last resort is financing with manufacturer bank unless you are leasing.

except i document all my scenes on my blog you idiot. just count them up if you have the mental acuity to add to 30 or so.
You make an average of $13k a month and you have shitty credit. Real smart.
Given that you do tranny scenes which pays about $1000-$1500, gay scenes $2000-$3000 a scene and your private gay escorting.
You make mininum of $13K a month, yet your renting instead of owning a home.
Yes you can rationalize that you need to save cause you do porn and you have nothing to fall back on. Anyone that makes $156,000 a year like you say you do should have a nice nest egg after 7-8 years in business to retire on if invested well. But obviously from what we see in your money management that isn't the case.
Maybe instead of doing 2 scenes a day, you should go back to school.

Jesus... I will never understand the venom that spews out of some people's keyboards. I also will never understand people who feel the need to constantly tell other people how they would have done things and how it is the smarter way. I didn't realize CXXX's blogspace was really him asking people for life/finance advice... silly me I thought it was him just documenting parts of his life.

Back in December, I traded my old Grand Cherokee for a gas-hog demo (34,000 miles) 5.7L Hemi Limited Edition Jeep GC.
The cocksuckers at the dealership, after whiddling down a deal I couldn't refuse ($1000 down; $425/mo. for X months @ 8.95%). Mind you, I have a 770-credit score, so this was uncalled for. This all included an extended B2B warranty to 75,000 miles or an additional 3 years, whichever comes first.
I'm no dummy with money, but the terms of the loan changed somewhere in between the deal and the closing. I would up paying that $425 per month for 7 years by their terms.
I took the fucker to my own bank, rolled my camera gear into it and re-fi'd for $610/mo. over 5.5 years. Not the best deal I've ever seen, but it saved me about $4,000.
Car dealers are fucking schisters.
In my line of thinking, due to your shitty credit, you should have taken the longer term loan, and put extra down in principal like you intend to do with the 48mo loan. I also have a Toyota Yaris for a commuter car, which I'm paying $332 per month over 5 years (@ 4.9%). If all goes right, it'll be paid off long before that, a $20k loan and Toyota has no early payoff penalty.
Quote:
A smart always walks into a dealership with outside financing. NEVER get financing at the dealership even with a high FICO score. Get financing first at your credit union, local bank you bank with, or national banks. Last resort is financing with manufacturer bank unless you are leasing.
This was my lesson in prepayment penalties. I took a $600 hit between allowing the first payment month to lag (made the payment on time, but out of $425, $200 was interest alone) and the early payoff penalty at the original financial institution.
As mentioned above, my own bank was able to roll my camera gear & the 'new' Jeep into one, knock 18 months off the loan term & almost 2.5% all in one swipe. I'm no genius with money, but this experience definitely made me rethink future financing decisions.

Those Hemi Jeep's are fucking sweet, I wish they made those and the 4 door Wrangler's back when gas was cheap. Here is a good article where a writer went undercover as a car salesman. http://www.edmunds.com/advice/buying/articles/42962/article.html

With 93-octane floating around $4.20/gal. here, I'm fortunate to drive it once per week. But, I like it, and I only have to fill it up once each month usually.
Leather interior, sunroof, Sirius radio, all the silly bullshit. Someone locally called it my 'pimp ride', but I'm content with the insurance companies definition, "leisure vehicle", it keeps the insurance in this fucking state reasonable.
