I'm referring to why the soldiers and such were willing to fight. They had no slaves and never would, but they knew a meddling damnyankee when they saw one.
And in any case, there's no shame at all for Southerners in admiring ancestors who fought for the South. That's great-great-grandpa you're talking about etc. The flag is a little different since it so often waved by racists now: nobody in the South has negative views of the flag but it's used so much in negative ways, and bothers even reasonable blacks enough, that it's often not worth it.
(I'd gladly flaunt the flag at Sharpton all day but not any of the black guys at work, who are good people)
