You are expected to tip in restaurants and bars. It's built into the pay scale. A restaurant actually can pay their staff a base less than minimum wage in anticipation of your tips.
I use 15% as my standard on restaurant tipping and move up or down based upon service. Usually I do give 20% as Tony suggests since most of the service I get is very very good - especially if they let me have a pitcher of ice water - I'm big on ice water with my meal. If I don't get a pitcher, they better be good at filling my ice water.
My tipping on bar drinks or items at sporting events is more based on the number of drinks than the price. If I'm with a group and want the barperson's attention, I will tip big the first time to get better service for the night. But, usually I only have 1 or 2 drinks so I really don't tip well in bars.
I tip service people OK. I haven't stayed in a hotel in years but I used to leave the girl money for cleaning the room if I was there for more than 1 night.
I tip the baggage guys at the airport when I give in my bag(s).
I tip if someone loads things in my car [like securing something large] or delivery people of large items to my apartment if it is done well and on time.
I tip moving men [though that hasn't come up in a couple of decades].
I NEVER tip at fast food. It always pisses me off to see a tip jar.
In the Hispanic neighborhood adjacent to mine they have small non-chain supermarkets. Often they have people, young kids and older women, who pack your bags who have tip jars. I don't think these people are considered employees. I don't know why they are there exactly. If I pay in cash, I tip some/all of the change. If I pay by CC, don't tip.
My tipping for take-out delivery - like pizza, chinese, fried chicken - is below par and doesn't change based on the price/quantity. I don't have take-out much anymore, but I used to give chinese food delivery people less than pizza. My tipping improved if I became friendly with a good delivery person. If delivery sucked, I would just call a different restaurant the next time.
For baseball games, I would try to avoid the guy who wipes down your seat and wants some cash. I hate those guys. But, I used to tip ushers I knew at Shea in the 90s if I wanted to improve my seat. I used to buy an upper deck ticket and get a great box seat. Otherwise, unless I can't find my seat, LEAVE ME ALONE!
I tip taxi guys well [20-25%] if they are efficient, friendly, don't play the radio and provide a clear receipt. I hate if they insist on a route different than my suggestion especially if it doesn't work out. When I would be stuck in the city late, late night [say 3am], I usually negotiate a decent price to get a cab to take me to NJ. The tip would be in the price.
My mom, who has Lupus, tips the wheelchair personnel who take her around at the airport. I noticed that they wouldn't take the money in Germany and Austria.
And, though I haven't been in quite some time, I used to tip strippers.

my husband was an annoyingly big tipper to the bartenders and cocktail waitresses at the strip club we used to hang out at. all the bitches would fight to wait on us. once they actually got into an actual slappy bitchfight right in front of us, which was kind of funny, actually. after one visit, the cocktail waitress called me and informed me that my husband's generosity over our last two visits had allowed her to buy a new washing machine.

The entire concept of tipping in NYC bars is lost on the new wave of tools living here. Concept works like this: sit down, order a drink, put a twenty on the bar, pay for your drink, push a buck or two forward into the tip well, drink your drink, order another, put another 5 or 10 or 20 on the bar (shows you have money and might be in for the long haul), pay for and drink your drink and—voila!—a free one comes. Then leave a few more ones or a five and, generally guaranteed unless you are a total fucking asshole, the drinks come freer and looser as the night moves on. I see people paying beer-by-beer with cash cards these days, and muttering under their breath about the lack of buy-backs and how the place sucks. Nothing will piss off a bartender more than paying with a credit card for one drink.  NOTE: This works like a charm in neighborhood bars, not the fucking Rainbow Room. It also works in train and bus station bars, and even most top-notch restaurants.

Charlie, that's how I tip in bars and ALWAYS get rewarded with free drinks twds the end of my stay. I notice most people (even if they're paying cash) don't tip until right before they leave.
If one pays by credit card, PLEASE tip in cash...a buck or few bucks every round even if you started a tab. It's because staff has to deduct the credit card service charge (the company charges the bar) if tipped on credit card.

the people usually get tipped out by the server, so the person seating you etc. will get their end later. I usually tip about 25% (i was a bartender /waiter fir 15 years) but I'll grease big on the first round if it's a busy bar and I wanna keep 'em coming. It's gotten me a lot of post last-call drinks. Where in the hell are all these bars that give you free drinks for tipping well? I always tip bartenders and servers (worked in a bar in college) and except for the bar I used to work at I've never received a free drink at a bar in my whole life.
I do have one exception to the always tipping the bartender rule. If I'm having to wait half an hour for my drink because the bartender thinks he is the offspring of Meadowlark Lemon and Tom Cruise's character in Cocktail and I'm dying of thirst because he is too busy juggling thirty seven different bottles of rum then he gets no tip.

i dont even remember reservoir dogs but steve buscemi i think rattled on like a cheap jew, its 18 percent to 26 percent, closer to 18 on an expensive tab with alcohol and more like 30 on a diner tab where your pancakes cost 4 dollars.

In some states it's illegal to give free drinks, because of the way the alcohol tax works.
It is illegal where I live but, so are the football, baseball, nascar, basketball and shake a day pools. Usually, the bar will get tipped off before the get busted.

As I said in the past, I tip 20+ depending. But here's a question for Burg and the like: Is it okay to tip a whore with ganja? Not just a nug, but like 7 grams? I mean can I put it out there as an option....

Naw. Just a little something for the road on top of the loot. I usually start with 'do you smoke'? (It's last visit if they say "Smoke What?" and their eyes light up). The response is usually yes, followed by how the n/wigger they buy it from only has chindro or some other shwag. At which point I produce some chron. I figure I'm just eliminating a step for them anyways.
And do dancers expect a tip for a champagne room dance? I'll give one usually, but I've had a few really awful dances where it was not deserved...

It's appreciated, but not expected. Most are just happy to even be in the champagne room. I always made more money not asking for tips, well, unless the guy was a physic vampire or total rapist.
