So far it seems to run silently - updates itself less often than 7.5. I ran a full scan and it found nothing. Old 7.5 would block bad downloads from sites. No notices from 8.0 yet. I trust the app though. They are pretty solid. For $35 you can get the full commercial version, which includes spyware protection.

While there's a lot of good freeware out there, I'd never chance my computer on a free anti-virus program. You get what you pay for. Seriously, just cough up the $140 for two years of Norton 360.

AVG is as good as it gets. I installed 8.0 and even let it install; the toolbar. I think I'll remove the toolbar and just keep the email scanner- I'm noticing a delay in the browser.
I will never buy another Norton utility, ever.

I hadn't used Norton since the DOS days so I gave it a shot last year. In less than two weeks I had 87 pieces of malware, 4 Trojan Viruses, and one piece of ransomware that shut down my system every 60 seconds to advertise a $69 solution to my virus problems.  3 days to wipe my drives and re-install all my software and backups. Been running Kaspersky ever since without a single infection. It updates every 6 hours and so far has blocked every threat thrown at it. I would never use anything with the Norton name again.

Since a few years, I have been using Talibaan AV. It looks a bit patched up and outdated, but it delivers. Before that, I had Homeland Security, but that was as leaky as a basket.

Pretty cool, I had it on my Ubuntu laptop friday and played with it all weekend. Downloaded it today for my Win desktop. Download it today, they are going for a 24 hr download record.
