Out of all the burglary arrests I've been involved in, three were with an armed homeowner holding the criminal until our arrival.
Without exception, the criminal stated that if he knew the homeowner was armed, he wouldn't have broken in. Well, duh!
So, please, feel free to completely ignore my first hand professional experience and keep your head deeply planted in the sand.
