If I had any firearms/weapons/guns, why would I tell anyone? That defeats the purpose.

Actually, no one. I just want something I can take to the range for first-timers. I was on a date with a girl last week and she nearly wet herself when she shot my Glock. It was a bit much for her.

Actually, the deterrent effect is the most efficient use of a firearm. That is, having it but not needing to use it.
Believing that a homeowner may be armed is the number one reason a burglar will bypass a house. Thieves are notorious cowards.
I own 7 pistols, 10 rifles, and 2 shotguns. Most are locked in a gun safe that would take a small tractor to move. Three of the weapons, one shotgun and 2 pistols, are hidden in different spots in the house that are locked but quickly accessible.
I've been shooting since I was 8 and until I left the po-po I was on the range once a month. For the last 8 years I've been lucky to get out once or twice a year.
At $20 to $50 a box for bullets, if I bring all my guns out, I can easily go through a grand in ammo in a single day. It can get real expensive real quick.

I have a 12 gauge semi-automatic, a .410 bolt action, and a 16 gauge pump that in actuality is a 16 gauge single shot due to the pump being broken.

You wacky Americans sure love them guns. We don't really have that option up here. I have a really nice and heavy telescopic baton. Not fancy, but perfect to whack the wrist or collarbone of the piece of shit smoking crack and/or pissing in the foyer...

You just spent $1K on ammo and live in an apartment? Does bear season come to Reseda more than once year or something?

I said I "could" spend that much, but rarely do. Usually it's a couple hundred every time I go to the range.
I have nothing against hunting, I, myself, do not hunt. My firearms, while a hobby, are more for protection from animals of the two-legged kind.
I haven't lived in an apartment on well over 20 years and never in Reseda. I currently own a nice 3200 square foot home bought and paid for with the profits from porn.
You don't even hunt and you need all that fire power? Are you going to shoot an intruder 20,000 times or something?
You are another Va. Tech waiting to happen. I bet that's why they kicked you off the force, because you couldn't pass your psych test.

It's called a hobby for a reason. You make a lot of asinine assumption, Cit. I left the Sheriff's Department a year after a new sheriff was elected because I didn't like his policies or politics. It was the right thing to do since his department has been rife with problems and scandal for the last several years.
And contrary to being the cause of the next mass shooting, I'm more likely, however remote the possibility, to be the "Armed Citizen" who prevents it from occurring. You see, I pass my psych tests with flying colors every year to keep my Concealed Carry Permit current.
BTW, it rarely takes more then two in the center body mass to stop an attacker, not 20 thousand.

I spoke with a relative, a retired NYC Police Lieutenant with his 20 years in, and emailed an old friend, a prosecutor for well over 25 years for NYS, NYC and now Westchester County.
Both quickly said that a large loud dog was better for deterring a burglar than owning a gun. They both said that burglars can easily see who does and doesn't have a large loud dog with little effort, and thus usually go to the house without the canine alarm.
The DA said he's dealt with countless cases of gun theft from apartments, offices, homes and even directly off of people who were carrying the weapon and were surprised by the assailant ... including, he said, a couple cops.
He believes that a good number of crimes in NY are committed with stolen guns.
He also said that, though it occassionally happens, he's never directly been involved in a case where someone has shot the home's watchdog. But, he's been involved in many where a "perp" has shot a gun owner.
The cop asked a very interesting question. He wants to know how the burglar is going to know by stalking out a home from the street, etc., which apartment or house has a gun and which doesn't.

Because of it's obvious presence, certainly a large dog is a good deterrent. But as another thread on this board pointed out, a large dog is not always a viable option for apartment dwellers for a large number of reasons.
From a recent 20/20 or 60Minutes episode (I don't remember which) it was stated that the majority of illegal guns in NYC come from legal purchases just across state lines and are illegally brought back into NY state. The numbers quoted far exceeded the use of stolen handguns.
The criminal use of firearms is a fact of life. Further outlawing and banning of firearms only insures that criminals will be the only ones armed.
When it comes right down to it and your life is being threatened by a criminal with a firearm, you can have your large dog and your 911, I'd rather have my Remington 870. But that is just my opinion.
BTW: Right below my ADT Security sticker is another that says "NRA Life Member". If that's not enough to scare away a bugler then he deserves what he gets by breaking into my home.

I don't know about that, GJ. I think they generally cut the phone line and then try to get in. If they hear the alarm siren they leave. The brand of alarm doesn't make much difference. I think I'd cut the net access too, were I a thief, because some systems and cameras work through the interwebs.
I have a big dog who barks first, then licks. It'll be up to me and my arsenal to bring the pain.

In short your idea of deterrence is wait until the guy is in your home with a gun and THEN deter him. My best deterrence has been to live in good, active neighborhoods. The last gun violence I know of in Weehawken is years ago when two cops pulled their guns on each other over who got the cop car with the working airconditioning. No shots were fired. I don't remember any shots in the 19 years I've lived here. The biggest controversy here in the last year was whether or not George Clooney made an illegal pass when he got in an accident. Quote:

Well ... People in small apartments shouldn't have powerful guns either. Where's the bullet going to go if you miss the "perp"? Or if you drop the thing and it accidently goes off?

Until I get some cited facts I can present for him to rebutt, I'll stick with the info I got directly from a former Brawley prosecutor.

What are you babbling about? I never said that they should ban guns. Personally, I would like them all licensed and nationally tracked. But, if criminals were the only ones with hand guns, it might be much easier to figure out who they are. And, just let the cops shoot when they see one.

Personally, I don't have a dog and I only have old target pump guns from my youth.
Everyone I know who was accosted by a crook with a gun and/or knife, including those whose apartments or offices were invaded, just gave up their stuff and lived.
Two were armed and taken by surprise. Of course, you'd wouldn't be
The only people I know who were killed in gun fire were bystanders in gang violence such as my sister's ex-brother-in-law who was shot on a Miami street when two passing cars emptied their guns on each other and missed.

I had stickers I got in the early 80s that has a gun laying on top of a rolled out Constitution from a second amendment lobby group. It says that "the owner of this property is armed and prepared to protect life, liberty and property."
I've been robbed at gun point just as many time with as without the sticker on my door. None.

a nice double and a few mauser-clones in bolt for killing things larger than a person. a cheap mossy's what won't kill people through 3 walls and is pretty foolproof for a primary defensive weapon and a sig/glock/hk around the bed works.
something .223ish for plinking. or if you need the FPS to defeat light armor, whichever.

I own an attractive single shot .20 cal Sheridan Air Rifle, and a single shot bb target pistol that I used to fire air darts.
I helped establish a rifle club at my college and I was the secretary/treasurer. But, I've never owned a "real" gun.

He was a guy I knew...he threatened me because he blamed me for his firing, when in reality he got fired cos he couldn't do his job. Even after he was escorted from the premises after threatening me, he continued to stalk me. I kept my S&W in the car...I pulled up to a stop sign, heard a screech of tires, and he ran up to my driver's side window waving a knife. I pulled my S&W from the door panel (I had it in a holster there) and put the barrel on his forehead. I told him that if he didn't immediately throw the knife away and back up slowly I'd blow his brains out. He threw the knife away, ran like hell, and I never saw him again. I could see that he'd pissed and/or shit his pants. It took me about an hour to get rid of the shakes.

Thanks for sharing. That reminds me of a bit Dave Attell did on the Daily Show about the right to bear arms. He said every American should have the right to carry a gun because you never know when some maniac is gonna run up behind you and say 'you're fired'.

I have a Crossman 760 with scope that I use when neighbors leave their Christmas lights on after mid-January. http://www.crosman.com/site/listing/1073I've also spent the last three years conditioning the neighborhood crows with ever-present peanuts in my pockets to serve as faithful and vigilant air cover.

Crows can take a hit Gunker... My Lab is forever stalking those fuckers and on more than one occasion I've sent one barrel of ten gauge into the side of one of those noisy pests only to see them reel, correct, and fly away. If you want to see feathers fly then Blue Jays are where its at kid.

Blue jays are much better fliers and will steal peanuts away from crows who will sit watching stupefied and hopeless and hope for a second peanut. It seems that the blue jay color-scheme is blind to crows.
A long time ago (when I was a teenager), I did maim a crow with a miracle long-distance Crossman shot (across the street, on top of a large tree.)
Before that, I had shot at crows at much-closer distances to no effect.
This time, the crow tumbled out of the tree and skipped about.
I went across the street to look at it closer, and realized it was bleeding out of a wing joint and could no longer fly.
I chased it about a bit, and delivered a kill shot to it's brain.
I soon realized that 50 crows were swarming about above me yelling in anguish. I got the hell out of there and was guilt-ridden.
Thus, from that point on, I no longer use the Crossman to kill, and to respect crows ala Native Americans. I now feed them on my way back and to the bus stop.
I've been doing this penance for three years in my neighborhood and now have crows flying to me from blocks away to get their peanuts.
The interesting thing is, over this three-year period, how do the crows recognize me? I've gone from clean-shaved to bearded, sometimes I carry a sportsbag, sometimes I don't, sometimes I'm dressed for work, sometimes casual, I usually walk about at the same times, but sometimes don't, hell, sometimes I exit/enter a different bus stop, sometimes I merely take out the garbage at a random time...
...in all cases, the neighborhood crows will often recognize me and fly close for a tasty peanut...
Wait; what was I talking about?

'open carry state'. You can go on trial for making a dirty movie. You can carry guns. Fuck America is confusing...

I've just figured out the way to get out of Iraq and calm down the rest of the Middle East in the process. Just issue a proclamation announcing that everyone over there get their shit together or the USO will be send an armed Pretty over for a tour.

I own alot, I mean alot, of guns. From your basic 22 cal plinkers, in-lines, 50 cal hawkins, 7mm mags, sigs, glocks, berettas, etc.
That being said I have to laugh at the CCW crowd here. I'd like at least one of you to fully explain your gameplan when it comes to killing someone outside of your home. Home defense is one thing and I'm fine with that. But if you think a permit is going to save your ass in a civil court then I hope you have the bankroll to back it up.
edit to add: nice nips pretty, what are they like 100 grain .30 cal?

my nipples?
um
theyre just skin dude
thank you
but theyre always always hard
i dont know why that is...
love, pretty
oh and yeah they told us that in firearm safety class- like an hour and a half was legal with a criminal defense attorney
and he said even if the person as attacking you and you had to kill them to get them off of you
youd still spend a lot of time in jail and money getting out of jail
permit or not
i think the permits just to carry it hiding on your person
but theyll let anyone thats not a felon carry one openly here in colorado in about an hour

You folks live in the wrong state. In SC, feeling like your life is threatened or, get this: feeling like you are witnessing someone else's life threatened gives you the right (and some say obligation) to use deadly force to end the threat.
It's not a routine occurrence, but I can't think of a single incident where the justified shooter was harassed around here.

I've killed a cheetah at very close range and a buff at 20 yards or so. the former was the best shot under duress i've ever made-they fly at you and there's not much light or warning.
as for crows-let me reiterate the Precharched Air Rifles in .22-25. daystate, air arms and evanix all make quiet and accurate carbines that will force you to use the heaviest ammo available to stay subsonic. a condor in .22 will do well over 1200fps with a 14.9grain pellet-i prefer eun-jins and jsb's.
anyhow, you can take a crow from 100 yards ethically and raccoons, possums, skunks and fisher cats and even coyotes at half that with a decent shot placement. they'll move less than 5 yards.

I have a few guns I use for hunting, have had guns for that purpose most of my adult life. Not long ago I bought my first pistol, a Springfield Arms XD 40 cal. My son has started riding MX, which meant we were out late a night with a trailer full of tools and bikes. Plus he plays a lot to travel ball, so again. the whole out late at night thing. Now when I was young I never saw the need for PP, I always felt I could take care of my self, but now that my son is with me my feelings have changed somewhat, especially after watching the news and all the fucked up shit that takes place.
Now do I really think I'll need to use it, no. But I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
