Why does it have to be a cause and effect situation where it keeps you from mistreating someone just to prevent bad things happening to you? Why can't you just treat someone well for the sake of being a decent person? There shouldn't be an incentive.
IF you believe that the fundamental energy you create in your life, living, & surroundings attracts like or similar energy as a basic fact of the universe, then Karma does make sense. "You reap what you sow", as a Christian would say.
Harm none, do what ye will. The "incentive" is a happy and fulfilling life.
