Yeah, that is why I always lie (liberally embellish) to them about what I do for a living, what I am earning, and who I am fucking.

I was outed to my extended family by my asshole cousin about 3 months after I started producing porn. He worked I.T. for a web hosting company that hosted nothing but adult websites, which is how he knew about my career change. But he failed to mention that part when exposing me at a family gathering.

Worse yet (if anything could be worse than being a pornographer) was a few months later when they found out I was a practicing Wiccan and had been for years.

Now this hypocritical, self-righteous group of Born-Again Evangelical Christians that I have for a family, prays constantly for my soul.
With the exception of my parents, they have ceased to invite me to family functions and I'm no longer on any of their Xmas card lists.

I don't typically just blurt out what I do to people I've just met, however, I do enjoy seeing the look on their faces when they idly ask, "So what do you do for a living?" and I give them the honest answer.
The responses split pretty evenly between "Appalled" and "Intrigued".

As opposed to what; the idiocy of believing in a big invisible man in the sky?

What you call praying, I call chanting.
What you call divine intervention, I call Karma.
What you call the Golden Rule (Do unto others...), I call the Wiccan Creed (Harm none...).
You believe in an afterlife and so do I, we only differ in the details.

Being a spiritual person is not idiocy, forcing your spiritual beliefs on another is.

It's a mix. I went to a skid school for two years and a shi-shi one for two (Lorne Greene and Rich Little went there!). I was always the dude with the big mohawk and the criminal friends so I think most of them are surprised I'm still breathing. I've served a lot of drinks and dinners to the shi-shi kids, but on the upside I've stayed in real good shape. I'd rather be fit and live modestly than be rich and fat.

I don't understand people who believe in karma.

Why does it have to be a cause and effect situation where it keeps you from mistreating someone just to prevent bad things happening to you? Why can't you just treat someone well for the sake of being a decent person? There shouldn't be an incentive.

I've never understood Karma to be a reward/punishment thing. Just a statement of fact that one's actions will come back to them. I suppose that some folks won't think about it seriously without divine heavy-handedness, though.

I think theres an incentive behind every choice we make. Wouldn't make much sense to be a decent person if you didn't get any personal gratification from it.

Ceara, I'm not saying that choices are never incentive driven. We've all done good things for people just to get in their good graces for that promotion, that guy/girl, etc; however, to be a decent human being in hopes of being indirectly rewarded from the universe is where I think it's illogical.

That's the thing, if you are looking for some sort of reward (indirect or not) than your ulterior motive directly changes the way karma affects you for said act.

If you treat ppl a certain way in order to get certain things from them, there is nothing karmic about that. That is just common sense. But when someone lies, cheats, and steals their entire life then they die in a plane crash, everyone blames it as karma. It is as illogical as divine intervention. People blaming unrelated events happening because of how someone treated people classify that as karma. That's where I have the problem.

You don't need to oppose it to anything, it's the sort of idiocy that does well enough standing alone.

When I said "incentive" was talking about something less tangible than a promotion, just the gratifying feeling you get when you do good. Without that there would be no humanly motive to act decently at all.. But I do see what you mean, for sure.

It's like the people braying that Ted Kennedy's tumor is his "karma" for Chappaquiddick (sp?). C'mon, that happened 40 years ago, fer chrissakes. If there was such a thing as "karma" in the divine sense, I would think that his failure to oust Jimmy Carter in the 1980 primary would be the more concrete example, especially for a member of that family.

The whole golden rule thingy is kind of the only thing to go by. "Do unto others...". Michael Shermer talks about that shit at length in his books and why it makes good biological sense as well. Sonny Barger had a quote that I've tried to live by: " Treat me good, and I'll treat you better. Treat me bad, and I'll treat you worse.".

If I understand Ceara's point properly, it is that to do the right thing causes one to feel good. My favorite relaxation is to walk along an abandoned railroad line along a peaceful river. A few evenings ago, I found a cell phone, and later that evening the owner called the cell from a landline, and I answered, and she came over to my house and picked up her cell phone. It feels good to do a good deed,

IF you believe that the fundamental energy you create in your life, living, & surroundings attracts like or similar energy as a basic fact of the universe, then Karma does make sense. "You reap what you sow", as a Christian would say.

Harm none, do what ye will. The "incentive" is a happy and fulfilling life.

At my 10th high school reunion (years ago) I was trying to describe the work I did to some classmate whose name I'd forgotten; he didn't grasp much of what I was saying about computer systems.

Finally a light dawned and he said "oh, you're a Bit Head!" and started laughing.

Kinda hard for me to know how reply since he had just said he still worked at the Burger King...

Actually it's a belief founded more in physics then metaphysics.

Solid matter, after all, is only a form of energy locked in a specific vibrational state. And you can clearly affect or be affected by solid matter. You are also affected by many other forms of energy through out your life; heat, light, all manner of the electromagnetic spectrum.
You control your own thoughts and emotions, which are nothing more than exerting control to bind energy in specific vibrational states within your brain. Is being able to externalize this control that far fetched?

The entire universe works on the principals of attraction and repulsion (gravity and the strong & weak nuclear forces), and we live within that universe, not apart from it.

Rather than "airy-fairy", it's actually quite logical and based in scientific fact and theory rather than myth and fabrication.

Plus, our Sabbats rock.

As do ALL spiritual belief systems (especially when described in a few brief sentences on a porn board).
For me, the big three (Christianity, Islam, and Judaism) are the ones full of BS.
I believe in the things I can see with my own eyes and not on myths and parables gleaned from storybooks created by men with hidden agendas.

I can look out my window every day and see factual, verifiable proof of my belief system. No other religion can offer that.
And please don't confuse Wicca with the bullshit Hollywood representations of Witchcraft and Satanism. They are not ever remotely the same thing.

I find it odd that you consider the big three to be Christinaity, Islam and Judaism.

Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism all dwarf Judaism in their numbers of followers/believers.

I cite the "Big 3" because they are the one I have the most exposure to. The statement should be considered more of an "et. al."
While I feel a little more respect to the eastern religions (as I am unaware of any wars they have ever started), I still have an aversion to any "organized" religion.

Put simply, I don't want someone telling me what I should and shouldn't believe in. I'll listen to someone else's beliefs and have philosophical discussions with them about it, but I will not be preached to, and I don't need to be "saved".

The absurdity of other religions is a poor justification for passing off a load of psuedo-scientific wibble as supporting evidence for you own beliefs. I could make an equally valid case in support of the church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

No, I chose Wicca because Christianity makes no sense, and the Wheel of Life is visible to me every day no matter where I look.

Nature makes sense, organized religion only makes sense when you view it as a means of populace control.

Christianity borrows heavily from the Pagans when it comes to its holidays though.

Like I said, we have great Sabbats.

I don't understand people who believe in karma.

Why does it have to be a cause and effect situation where it keeps you from mistreating someone just to prevent bad things happening to you? Why can't you just treat someone well for the sake of being a decent person? There shouldn't be an incentive.

You have a problem with supernaturalism and "magic thinking", thus religion in general. I tend to call that "intelligence".

But, like Ceara, I believe that no one does anything without incentive.

So, if it gets people to behave better, I'll support their belief in karma, or whatever. Getting them to behave better being the incentive for my support ....

So you chose Wicca as the most offensive religion to piss off your Evangelical Christian parents.

I’m sure you did not read this Ivor, but he claimed to be a cop, at one time. This tells me he chose wicca just to salve his cop conscience, because he actually knows the horrors these girls go through in the prostitution game. Either that or being a cop wasn’t creepy enough for him.
