Anything powered in your car is going to take a slice of the engine power, be driven directly off the engine, or placing an electrical load via the alternator. This even applies to things like the radio.

A/C just happens to be something that uses a significant amount of power, whereas others tend to be too trivial to notice.




All of these are minor drags on engine efficiency when you consider at least 70% of the energy used is wasted as heat.*
Use the fuel more efficiently and the rest of this becomes moot.
