This is an urban legend, one I've heard several derivations of fatty. My car got super great mileage until I took it in to be serviced and the dealer replaced the engine/computer/carburetor and now my mileage is crappy.

Not arguing that. Not at all. It's an urban legend I've never even heard before.

I'm just saying that after the gas crisis of 1979, some cars, like the Rabbit and some economy Jap cars, seemed to get better mileage than many seem capable of now. I have no idea why. I'm no engineer.

Maybe people want more power in their cars or its the weight of all the computerized crap that's in cars now.

I have VERY little knowledge of cars. But, with a manual, I actually made repairs on the Colt - replaced wires, the distributor, the battery, etc. Honestly, there wasn't much under the hood.

I once borrowed my Dad's car and the battery died. The tow guy and I couldn't even find the f-ing thing in the mess of crap that was in there. It turned out that it was completely buried in the car and that there was just a terminal to attach to. I could NEVER replace that battery on my own.

Maybe the weight of all this extra crap impacts the mileage.

I'd just like to see more cars like the old VW Rabbit is all.
