First sign of the apolcalypse: Gas has become so expensive that someone siphoned half a tank of gas from my pickup overnight.

I wonder what the tipping price is on gas that starts the revolution?

I wonder if we can weasel an invasion of Venezuela out of the Monroe Doctrine?
El Rojo Hugo would finally be vindicated for his anti-American paranoia, right before we hang him. That'd be funny as hell.

Short answer: Probably not, unless they had some sort of crushing national debt or other factor that would make invasion by a European power imminent.
But since when have we worried about such niceties?

I've changed my name to Steezo now. The AK Steve (Alaska Steve) name was sort of a joke. One local Alaskan thing I've noticed is that no matter how big the city up here, someone is going to refer to themselves as being the only guy with that name. In a city of 20,000, there will be some guy who calls himself Kenai Mike, or Homer Pete, or Fairbanks Ken or some such shit.

You people don't know how good you have it. The current average UK unleaded price works out at $8.60 a gallon in your measures.

Yeah but these prices are way out of the norm for us, this is a new situation for the US, Europe's economy has been dealing with much higher gas pricing all along.

Not only during WWII. We had fuel rations over here in the seventies during 'the second oil crisis (1979)'.

We didn't ration it then, but I remember lines stretching for blocks to get gas. It would take forever for us to pull out of our driveway, since we were around the corner from a gas station.

England's price is probably higher because of taxes, cost of living, and the fact that everything is more expensive there. You average it out and you'll find the price per gallon around the world to be about 5-6 dollars per gallon. The prices in the states aren't going to stop rising until it hits that barrier.

I think that contest is more than 100x away from a useful car as most people would define it. It's at least 10x away in cruise speed and probably another 10x or more away in frontal area. If you want to realistically get one person to and from work today at 125+ mpg with no more than a briefcase or laptop as cargo then a Honda Super Cub can do it. Beyond that you have to carefully limit the frontal area, top speed and maybe compromise on what happens going uphill.

I had a friend I carpooled with in the early 90's who had a brand new 91 Ford Escort that he loved. It got 82 miles per gallon and he always bragged about it! About 2 years after buying it he got a recall notice for some safety device. Once the vehicle was returned a few days later it never got better than 38 mpg. He swears it was a completely different engine when he got it back.
I'm just sayin....

That is sort like the story about the car that runs on water or the carburetor that got 80 mpg, or the chip in the fuel injection comp. that allowed it to get 80 mpg. All urban legends and all unprovable.

Geez, so not only are you moronic enough to be a wiccan, you're also a fucking moron with a tinfoil hat.
The only way a 91' ford escort is going to get 80+ mpg is if it's falling off a cliff. If you had any fucking clue as to how physics works, you'd realize how inane this is.
That's completely ignoring the fact that ford "accidentally" installed an engine that got that kind of mileage, but only in his car.
They teach physics and logic in canada, right?

I had a Plymouth [Mitsubishi] Colt 4-cyl manual shift that I regularly got between 45-50mpg highway in the mid/late 80s.
I know some of the VW Rabbits in the early 80s used to get like 60mpg highway. Our huge Mercury stationwagon used to get as low as 8 mpg city in the 70s.

This is an urban legend, one I've heard several derivations of fatty. My car got super great mileage until I took it in to be serviced and the dealer replaced the engine/computer/carburetor and now my mileage is crappy.

Not arguing that. Not at all. It's an urban legend I've never even heard before.
I'm just saying that after the gas crisis of 1979, some cars, like the Rabbit and some economy Jap cars, seemed to get better mileage than many seem capable of now. I have no idea why. I'm no engineer.
Maybe people want more power in their cars or its the weight of all the computerized crap that's in cars now.
I have VERY little knowledge of cars. But, with a manual, I actually made repairs on the Colt - replaced wires, the distributor, the battery, etc. Honestly, there wasn't much under the hood.
I once borrowed my Dad's car and the battery died. The tow guy and I couldn't even find the f-ing thing in the mess of crap that was in there. It turned out that it was completely buried in the car and that there was just a terminal to attach to. I could NEVER replace that battery on my own.
Maybe the weight of all this extra crap impacts the mileage.
I'd just like to see more cars like the old VW Rabbit is all.

Part of the problem is that it's not just about the engine but also aerodynamics. Some effort goes into aerodynamics on the top and sides, but other than a few cases like Ferrari cars are a disaster underneath (and even Ferrari is concerned with downforce, not efficiency).
I think his leg was being almost torn off by his buddy - there is no way that engine and chassis can reach 90 mpg at any speed as sold. If told "do it" and given an open budget I think it could be done with chassis aerodynamics and engine tuning for one speed. Not much other than the engine block might remain, and if it got 91 mpg at 45 mph it might only get 30 mpg at 35 mph or 55 mph.
The 70's oil crisis VW and such Fatman mentions may have been tuned to a particular EPA testing methodology, or might have been tuned to 55 mph alone. Maybe modern versions are tuned to do well at a broader speed range and EPA tests are less susceptible to being gamed. And of course emissions and safety rules these days are very expensive in efficiency.
I had a VW diesel Rabbit around 1980 and don't ever recall cracking 50 mpg.

"I'm just saying that after the gas crisis of 1979, some cars, like the Rabbit and some economy Jap cars, seemed to get better mileage than many seem capable of now. I have no idea why. I'm no engineer."
Well, there are several factors at work, affecting the mileage of current cars, and reducing compared to the late 70's early 80's economy cars you speak of.
First, those cars weighed much less than current cars. A vw rabbit of the time weighed between 1800 and 2200 lbs, depending on the year and configuration (2-door, 4-door, cabrio, ect.). A current vw rabbit runs around 3100lbs. This increase in curb weight requires more force and therefore more power to move F=M*A Force needed=Mass*Acceleration
The increase in weight is due to all of the niceties that are expected on current cars, as well as the structural reinforcements required to pass modern crash tests and deliver a sturdy chassis, and also the size of current cars.
Another factor affecting the mileage is the power of the engines in current cars. A typical family sedan will have in the range of 150-200 hp. A economy car from the late 70's to early 80's would have half that amount or less. The diesel rabbits in non-turbo form had a whopping 49hp. That's not acceptable for modern driving habits, nor the weight of modern vehicles.
Another factor is the speed that most people drive nowadays. No 55mph speedlimits anymore. Most people drive 70+ on the highway. The wind resistance at higher speed requires significantly more power to overcome.
Last factor I'll mention is the emissions controls on modern cars. When you lower NOx emissions through egr controls and stratified burns in the engine you reduce the efficiency, and therefore the mpg rating.

Windows down vs. air conditioning
"Urban puzzle": it is more efficient, on a hot day, to run with the A/C on and windows up than to run with windows down (b/c of increasing car's drag).
Computer-based mpg measurements: * 11.7/11.8 with A/C on and windows up * 11.7/11.8 with A/C off and windows up * 11.3 with A/C off and windows down
So, according to the computer, it's better to use A/C with windows up.
This was too quick and easy for TV, so they decided to stage a seven hour marathon, race-til-you're-empty duel, with Jamie driving an SUV with A/C on and Adam driving an SUV with windows down. Though, once the safety inspector intervened, it was no longer a seven-hour marathon, it was a bit slower (45mph instead of 55mph), and a lot shorter (only 5 gallons each).
Jamie's A/C car ran out of gas first -- Adam's windows down SUV ran for another 30 laps -- completely contradicting the computer mpg estimate. Computer estimate based on air flow into the engine, so it would appear that it is unable to properly model the difference between A/C and windows down.

If I remember correctly, a typical rotary A/C compressor uses about 1.4 hp. Older piston style compressors like York brand compressors used significantly more.
Another twist is that many newer compressors are variable displacement and can vary the amount of power needed to run based upon the cooling load, so they're more efficient when you don't need as much cool air. Older compressors would cycle on and off using their clutch as more high side pressure was needed for the A/C.

OK, so this indicates that A/C takes a slice of efficiency. This is also my hands-on experience, even though it's far from extensive.
