Trying Video LAN Client might be worth a try. It tends to be less annoying and make less problems than the Windows Media Player.

It is freeware.

You would have to open the file or internet address by using the Video LAN Client application.

Right-clicking on the file or link, choosing "open with" and then selecting Video LAN Client (VLC) is my suggestion for now.
