I went to see Hancock today. It's a very good summer flick. The CGI was top notch and Wil Smith was very funny.
It's worth the price of admission.

No German here so I probably missed a lot of the subtext. The movie reminded me of that book on Hitler's last days, by Hugh Trevor Roper. I guess reading that or even Joaquim Fest's original (in translation) would help understand more.
I Have Albert Speer's, "Inside the Third Reich" on my reading list. It should prove interesting. Undertag had him shown as a pretty levelheaded guy but one who did not want to know too much.

Understanding German makes it more real. Some things do get lost in translation.
I have Trevor-Roper's book lying around here and read a few parts; Fest is also around (but unread so far). Basically, any book expanding on the entourage of Hitler in his last months makes it easier to understand the movie.
'Inside the Third Reich' (in English) is going with me on holiday next week. I hope to finish it within 10 days. I'm not sure what to think of Speer exactly. He refused orders in the last year or two, but before that... We'll see.

Inside The Third Reich is a good read, but a bit self-serving. Remember, Speer just barely escaped the noose at Nurenburg. (The Russians were adamant upon hanging him, for all of the laborers who died in the armament plants.) And he basically wrote it on TP in Spandau in an effort to justify himself to his kids and to posterity.
Trevor-Roper, though... remember, he's the guy who "authenticated" the Hitler Diary forgeries, so I take that guy with a full shaker of salt.

just got back from 'hancock'... entertaining enough, but i personally thought the whole cherize theron subplot was unnecessary... my husband HATED it, he's always felt threatened by the big black penis.

Be careful about Downfall – it’s as bad as a Hollywood movie in the way it rewrites and distorts the historical facts. The heroic SS doctor for example carried out experiments on prisoners in concentration camps and Goebbel's speech about cutting throats was taken from a fictitious, discredited source. Mind you, I dread to think what Tom Cruise’s Valkyrie will be like  Be similarly careful with "Inside the Third Reich". It's extremely interesting and insightful don't get me wrong but as Jim B says, his account is very self-serving. Afterwards you should read Gitta Sereny's "Albert Speer: His battle with truth" to discover what he left out. Nicolaus Von Below was so disgusted by Speer's distorted version of events and his portrayal of Hitler that he wrote his own account "At Hitler's Side" which is more honest about Hitler's strengths as well as his obvious shortcomings.

"The Secret Glory" - Richard Stanley's doc on Otto Rhan's (Hitler directed) quest for the Holy Grail. Very interesting.
"The Ruins" - Typical Hollyweird horror flavor, but a fun ride nonetheless
"Oldboy" - Asian revenge flavor with a serious bite. Kinda like "Death Wish" in overdrive.
"Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door" - Fucking brutal, venom laced movie.... A MUST see.
"Neu Wave Hookers" - Fell asleep during the 2257 card
"The Mechanics of Id" - Seriously, the next "Eraserhead".

Had a bit of time on my hands so I finally watched There Will Be Blood- it was well made and acted but failed to entertain me. I kept wondering why someone hadn't killed the Daniel off by the halfway point in the film.

I watched '300' last night...I enjoyed the comic book when it first came out, but this seemed to be a little bit overblown/overlong. It has a few good moments, but I've seen better.

Went with the old lady to see "You Don't Mess with the Zohan", ad "Hancock". Sandler movie was kind of stupid. Smith's was Ok...

The last few movies I have seen in the theater were kid movies--Horton Hears A Who was good...today, the kids and I are going to see WALL-E and I have to admit I'm really looking forward to it...last movie I watched on dvd was Hotel Rwanda, really good, really depressing

we just went to see "journey to the center of the earth." it was actually pretty entertaining, in a "national treasure" kind of way. total bullshit but fun enough way to kill a couple of hours. i've kind of had a crush on brendan fraser since that dumb harvard movie he made, although he needs to lose the john travolta hairpiece already.

I went to see Hellboy 2 today. I enjoyed it enough to recommend it. It had excellent special effects and pretty good humor. Not going to win an oscar or anything but a fun movie. It's kind of like a cross between Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV version) and Lord of the Rings.
