It's history. How much of it can you fudge anyway?
Ask Oliver Stone.
Fatty, you are leaving yourself wide open on this one...the amount of 'historical' or 'based on a true story' films that have no relation to reality is literally endless.
U-571, for example.
Quote:
U-571 is a 2000 film directed by Jonathan Mostow, and starring Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel, Thomas Kretschmann, Jon Bon Jovi, Jack Noseworthy, Will Estes, and Tom Guiry. In the movie, a World War II German submarine is boarded in 1942 by disguised United States Navy submariners, seeking to capture her Enigma cipher machine.
The film's plot, though a work of fiction, is partly based on real events. It attracted criticism for two reasons: first, it was British personnel from HMS Bulldog who first captured a naval Enigma machine, from U-110 in the North Atlantic May 1941, before the United States entered the war. Second, German U-boat crews were portrayed in a negative light.
The real U-571 was never involved in any such events, was not captured, and was in fact sunk in January 1944, off Ireland, by a Short Sunderland flying boat from No. 461 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force.
Americans didn't capture the Enigma decoder. Britain did...but it's an American movie, so, you know what happens. It's more appealing to an American audience this way.
Hollywood never lets the facts get in the way of a good story. It's always best to remember that these are dramatisations, not documentaries (even though no documentary is 100% unbiased), and it's best to avoid taking what you've seen as a historical fact, because more often than not it isn't. Hollywood routinely changes works of fiction to make it 'better' for the screen (for example, the ending of Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale"), and it does the same thing with historical and/or factual material too.
Sadly, there are still some people walking this earth who believe that Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet's characters in 'Titanic' were real people, when they are in fact both nothing more than literary inventions.

But it is a science textbook...it's Christian Science.
Quote:
Hollywood even makes "political" alterations like the one in U-571, in historical-fiction works as well. In the book "Master & Commander" the British are chasing an American frigate. In the movie, it's the hated French.
Historical revisionism and a side order of Freedom Fries to go, anyone?

This is only kind of off topic.
Can any of you folks recommend any awesome car movies along the lines of Duel or Vanishing Point.
If that doesn't help I am looking for another movie where vehicles are sort of "characters" in the story. (In "Duel" the truck was a character and in "Vanishing Point" moving the car was the plot).
Also, Damnation Alley fits into the kind of thing I am after.
Thanks.

"Christine" was based on a Stephen King novel. wiki
"Thunder Road" with Robert Mitchum is a good movie. Youtube song. Mitchum was a good tough guy in his day.
There is a series of "The Fast and the Furious" movies about kids and Japanese cars. I like "Rebel Without a Cause" though it's only marginally about the cars.

I just Popped this Pakistani horror flick into the DVD player.
I loved this one!! I got a screener a while back, very well designed horror film. Did you like it?
I thought a lot of it was good. The ending was a bit of a let down, though.
I saw this one last night.

I just found the deluxe version of King of New York. I didn't watch it again (i will) but there is a documentary on disc two that I've been dying to see called Schooly D: Snowboarder . He did the soundtrack for the movie and I was nuts about his records my last couple of years of high school. He is credited as the original Gangster rapper. And he's from Philly, which pissed off a lot of New York MC's.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schooly_D

The Nuge! Sad to hear it man, I actually had some hopes for this one based on what I've seen in trailers and that Sutherland's name is attached to it.

Viz- It's just one of those movies that makes you go "But hey, what about..." too many times. It's worth a buck from one those Redbox machines.

Nip/Tuck is not a movie.
Watched "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" recently.
Robert Altman's "Western" with Warren Beatty and Julie Christie, with a soundtrack by Leonard Cohen.
Worthwhile, especially as a prototype for "Deadwood", and the "ironic" gunfight at the end in a raging blizzard.
