Kingfish = I'm assuming you've never seen a COBOL hex dump. Since all of the values were in Hex, there is/was no need for side notation. One value of using Hex is less characters than base 10 or octal. In a Hex world like COBOL, you don't/didn't indicate a hex notation - why would you.

So, if we counted in hex, her age would be 20. If we counted in base 5 her age would be 112.

In 7 digit ASCII number characters start with the binary value of 48 base ten for "0", i.e. 0110000. The numeric characters proceed in order from there each one more than its predicessor.

20 would be:

32 would be:

112 would be:
