I'm spooked when I see a pit too, because you don't know if the owner is any good. I've always heard friend-of-a-friend that pits are one of the hardest to train and take the most commitment from an owner ... and I generally assume that didn't happen whenever I see a pit.
What I would accept is requiring anyone who wants to own a large or powerful dog take a class on that breed describing the personality traits *of that breed* and how much training is going to be required up front and on a daily basis. Just enough to weed out those who don't know it's an issue.
Dogs need a varied environment. A dog in an apartment is like a human - you go stir-crazy cooped up in a small area after a while. Sheer boredom is an issue if they only get out a few minutes for a walk and there's no one to play with all day.
When I first heard of Cesar Milan's TV show I assumed it would be pure Hollywood shlock but that's not the case at all. He knows his dogs, and more importantly, his dog-owner problems.

So, in your crackhead world this is ok? Put a muzzle on him and all is cool even though he wants to tear the throat out of every person he meets? You're the reason people hate pits. Take the time to socialize your dog. And don't give that horseshit that he was abused in a former life so aggression towards humans is a natural reaction. That's garbage.

If the people are really in control of the dog, those are not needed, if you are really in control the dog walks behind you or beside you and never pulls on the leash. If you are really in control the fact that dog doesn't like people won't matter at all. But there is always a training period in the beginning.

I risk having Gypsy use "teh Gay Graemlin" on me again but that was the point I was making about Pits. The muzzle is almost like the heavy chain that some douchebags walk them around on...While I agree that yes they can be rescued and yes it does depend on the owner, the Pit is primarily used as a symbol of badassness. Not a Racist or Hip Hop slag either...I have equal disdain for idiot Hippies that insist on owning dogs that are half wolf or whatever. same bullshit thing. Plus after reading the forums of that nasty troll whore Belladonna I find it hard to trust the judgement of Gypsy over anything... but the dalmation is cute and they are lovely dogs.

jerkoff he has had socialization classes and every class you can think of, the money I spent on him is in the 1000's. I still take no chances and in certain places he wears his muzzle especially when Im going to be around children cause they just come up behind him running towards him and it freaks him out. I love how everyone knows what's good for my dog. You should never just go up to a dog and pet it anyway, always ask the owner first. Never been a crackhead, you must have me confused w/someone else. I was a heroin addict (ex), huge difference. And Im the reason people adopt pits from the shelter at my events every Saturday morning. If he has his muzzle on and someone tries to pet him he doesnt like it, he must feel trapped. There are certain people he likes and certain people he dont like, ex: chinese bother him, why I dont know. People should still ask first.

If you need a collar like that and a muzzle, I don't care what the breed is, you are clearly not in control of that animal. At least the animal doesn't think so.
One more time, he only wears that in the park during the afternoon walks w/the dog walker. There are lots of kids in this particular park. Dont want to take any chances, that is the only time he is muzzled. He walks very well on a leash, in the beginning he didnt and it has rubber attachements, not just metal against his skin. He also has about 29 different collars, he doesnt wear that everyday, I change off, he's quite stylish, you should see his coat and hoodie collection. He listens very well, very smart and has had many obedience classes, knows all he needs to know. Very very smart dog. Has some issues, dont we all? And he knows who the pack leader is. When we are out and a dog passes, all I have to do is say Bandit, focus on me and he totally does and ignores the dogs. He also wont eat and sits and waits till I tell him to eat. His classes have worked wonders, when I first got him, he was a mess. Sits at every corner when we have to cross the street, he's come a long long way. This dog totally deserved a 2nd chance and a chance to live.

In a pack of dogs a leader always goes first, it decides what to sniff, and when to bark at others. What does that tell you when you see dogs leading their owners? It's not a matter of remembering their training.

But there is always a training period in the beginning.
How long does it take a breed like a pit to un-train if you go on vacation or a trip?
I see lot of people out with dogs on walks in my neighborhood and I would say that in 80+% cases it's the dog walking the owner and not the other way around.
My dog walks right besides me not ahead not behind, exactly next to my left side thats the side I walk him on, except for when he runs in the running area, then I just take off his leash and he goes insane running like the fastest on four feet I've ever seen, I love it and my Shihtzu chases him barking, he actually keeps up with him, it is a sight to see. Right Have2cit, he shouldnt be infront of me and he never is.

I have never left my dogs alone for more than 3 days and nothing changed when I got home.

this happened the other day...
YOUNGSTOWN — Neighbors used a rake to beat away a pit bull that mauled a 6-year-old Republic Avenue boy.
“I’ve never seen anything like it in my life,” said Wanda Greer, still trembling as she watched a Mahoning County dog warden use a snare to capture a tan pit bull next door around 8:20 p.m. Sunday.
“I heard his mother’s screams and then saw the dog rolling the baby like a tumbleweed. I heard the bones crush on his left arm.”
Greer identified the child as Paul Richardson Jr., 1416 Republic. She said the dog bit the boy’s face and neck, ripped his lip and “bent his arm back like paper.”
The child’s condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center was unavailable Sunday night because he was still in the emergency room.
The dog, which belongs to the boy’s family, somehow got out of the backyard pen, Greer said. A black pit bull, described as friendly, had been in the house.
The call to police, around 8 p.m., initially listed the victim as a nonbreather. Three officers were on the scene within minutes, as was an ambulance.
Greer said there was a lot of blood and showed great concern for the little boy’s condition. “He was fading in and out,” she said.
Greer said the boy’s mother was trying to free her son from the pit bull’s jaws, but the dog kept tearing at the child’s flesh as they rolled in the yard. Greer’s husband grabbed a rake to beat the dog away while the boy’s mother tried to get the dog’s teeth off her son.
