Jim Webb was on Meet the Press this morning talking about the bill, so I looked into it a bit. On it's face, this seems like a damn good piece of legislation. Bush argues (rather weakly) that the bill would erode efforts at retention in the services. Seems to me that the opposite would be the case; that if you want to recruit, and keep, quality people, doing the right thing by them oughta be a no-brainer.

I haven't been able to find what McCain's specific objections to the bill are. So I e-mailed the campaign, saying (quite truthfully) that as a former Democratic County Committeeman who hasn't made up his mind on who to back, I'd like to know where the Senator stands on the issue. Let's see what happens.

Also, Politico reports that McCain sent Webb a letter seeking compromise on the issue.
