widespread adoption and understanding of antibacterial agents/cleansing routines is recent--more or less postwar before most countries got up to speed. for the previous couple of thousand years, it was still reasonably prudent, seeing nasty things do best in warm, dark areas high in humidity. in another 100 years, you can call it mutilation if you want.

kudos for being so progressive though, lose the kneejerk thing, it makes you look like a simpleton.
