The another guy on the Bears ... this time for DUI on a boat: <<Clicky>> A guy from the Falcons pounds his wife: <<Clicky>> At least he didn't kick the dog ... And, NOW it's not just the bad boys. Clean-cut, good citizen Marvin Harrison is in a heap of trouble. <<Clicky>> It doesn't even matter if he didn't do anything. In PA, if his gun was used ... that's jail time.

It's not called the National Felon League for nothing. Although Benson says he wasn't drunk and the cops beat him up for nothing. Who do you believe, honest local Texas cops (yeah, like there's any of those) or an honest, law abiding professional football player (yeah, like there's any of those either)?

Benson was Boating While Black. Come on, everyone knows blacks can't swim and don't like water, right? If you saw a boat on the lake with a bunch of black guys that obviously can't be right. Especially if there were a couple of white girls.
I live in that county, and I'm a little bugged that the cop admitted that there was no cause, suspicion or reason to stop Benson in the first place. If there was no reason, so little that the cop can't even fabricate one afterwards, I kinda wonder if maybe the *only* thing was Boating While Black.

I heard the Bear talking about it today. He was very calm and rational. As JRV notes, the cop may have been a tad "ambitious". This is also the state that let Cheney sober up before questioning him about shooting his friend.
There appears to be a great divide in the administration of Justice in parts of Texas. Part of it appears to racial ... not like Texas is alone in this. And, part appears to be class oriented as well - poor whites appear to be victims of zealous Texas law enforcement as well.
So, I'm going to give this player the benefit of the doubt.
But, the Dean is right. More and more it's the National Felon League.
It's why I was actually happy the Jets didn't get McFadden - character issues before millions tends to mean major issues afterwards. And, NYC has waaaaay too many temptations for those inclined to indulge.
Someone emailed me about the Bengals who seem to want to continue to collect problems and potential problems. They drafted Fresno State defensive tackle Jason Shirley, who was suspended three times his senior season and eventually kicked off the team. Sounds like a fine citizen ...
Maybe the NFL makes them keep on the helmets so we can't ID them by their "wanted" posters.

In this state the DNR officers can stop any boat any time for any reason- and they frequently do. It's a huge hassle to haul out lifejackets, papers, flares, horns and whistles etc. while the officers leer at whatever females are aboard.
I have been "boarded" a couple times, which isn't very much compared to my peers. From watching the officers work it appears they harass whoever looks like they're having a good time.

Benson, the Bears' first-round draft choice in 2005, was also charged on May 3 for driving a boat while intoxicated and resisting arrest.
"Disappointment is too much an often-used word when we're talking about Cedric," Bears general manager Jerry Angelo told reporters. "I am very surprised he put himself in this situation."
Benson has averaged just 3.8 yards per carry during his three years in Chicago. His starting position could be in jeopardy as the Bears have drafted running back Matt Forte heading into the 2008 season.
