Ivor's right. It's more of a friendly appellation. Like calling a Welshman "Taffy."

Hmm. I think it at least used to be a slant againt the Irish, much the same way calling an Itlian a "Gino" was: it inferred that Italians/Irish were so stupid they all named their children the same. Hence "Ginzo" after "Gino," and "Paddy" after "Patrick."

My grandfather Patrick was Irish...he bristled when called "Paddy." I'm not gonna doubt a guy who was a coal miner/welder his whole life.
